Frank Hawkins inning Committee wickley Public Schools wickley, Pennsylvania jar Mr. Hawkins: Your letter of August 1,1955 has been received and presented the Executive Committee of the Proposed Quaker Valley Joint hool. Our reply to the questions listed in your recent correspon-nce is set forth as follows: “Have the school districts of Aleppo, Glenfield, Haysvdle id Osborne been asked to come into the jointure?” Answer—No. f not will they be asked?” Answer—No action has been taken ' the Proposed Quaker Valley Joint Board of School Directors, iwever; there are no restrictions in the Articles of Agreement ohibiting the admission of other districts, the agreement having ien drawn with that aim in mind. “Will the $350,000 mentioned in the agreement be raised by >nd issues or by the creation of an authority?” Answer—Method financing will be determined by plans suitable to all Boards. "What share of the $350,000 expenditure will each of the lrticipating school districts be expected to bear?” Answer—Pro-sions for capital expenditures by component districts are written ito the Proposed Quaker Valley Joint Articles of Agreement. “Have you any commitments from contractors in support of te $350,000 limitation on high school building costs? ’ Answer—No irmal bids from contractors, but estimates from architects on Jrtain proposed plans. “How many students would the expanded Leetsdale High chool house?” Answer—Seating capacity for approximately 600 udents. , “How much space would be available in the Leetsdale High chool for Sewickley students and those from Aleppo, Glenfield, taysville and Osborne, which Sewickley presently serves?” Answer -Adequate seating will be available for all pupils in grades 10 irough 12. “What do you contemplate doing with respect to the teachers resently employed in the two high schools?” Answer—Necessary iacher assignments would be made; this is an administrative roblem. “The jointure agreement is silent with respect to the member-hip of committees. Would it not bejpbssible under the agreement s it is now written for one or more districts to be unrepresented n the Quaker Valley Joint School Committee?” Answer—No, the chool Laws of Pennsylvania make provisions for membership f joint school committees. " , , “Section 1701 of the State School Code provides that the fint school system should bear the cost of the transportation or aipils, and that the cost thereof should be paid by the several listricts, along with other costs of establishing and furnishing the chools in such manner and such proportion as they may agree ipon. Is that not in conflict with your contract’s proviso that each if the school districts shall organize and pay for the transportation if children within its geographical confines, ^ but that sun trans-iortation should be supervised and co-ordinated by die joint ioard?” Answer-“—1Transportation expense 'coverage as set forth m he Articles of agreement of the Proposed Quaker Valley Joint ichool conforms to the provisions of the School Laws of Pennsylvania. “Please send us plans of die construction contemplated at the Leetsdale High School.” Answer—There have been no plans prepared of contemplated construction, but architect’s sketches have peen submitted. Please send us plans of die construction contemplated tor the Edgeworth Grade School.” Answer—There have been no final plans prepared but on hand are several rough drawing proposals, lone of which has been approved. . . , It must be pointed out that the answers to certain of tlie above questions are to be construed merely as a reasonable interpretation of the terms of the agreement and not as a final decision ot tlie Board and that complete and full answers to the questions raised patinot be determined until the Quaker Valley Joint School System lS m opération. . , . , Hie Executive Committee finds no acceptance of the myita-ton of the Proposed Quaker Valley Joint Schools for the Sewickley school District to join with them. They arc unable to find m your letter of August 1, 1955 any reference to the diree conditions set forth in the invitation. Since no reference was made to these conditions, the Executive Committee has no other course but to conclude that the aforementioned conditions are not acceptable and as a result the reply of thePlanning Committee of the Sewickley Board of School Directors is tantamount to a rejection of the Proposed Quaker Valley Joint School invitation. If tlie above conclusion is erroneous, we would be pleased to have your further reply thereto no later than Friday, August 12, 1955 since it is planned that tlie representatives of the Joint Board will meet with tlie Allegheny County Board at their next regular meeting scheduled for Monday, August 15,1955. ■ Very sincerely yours, R. Jackson, of Sewickley, on winning the Commendation Medal for developing a new method of testing jet engines, at ceremonies in Madrid, Spain. __________ New 'Y' Program Secretary Named Miss Aldino Weaver Wins Air Force Medal The United States Air Force awarded Master Sergeant Stanley B. Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs, J. B. Jackson, Sewickley, the Commendation Medal for his development of a new method for testing Jet aircraft engines, Sgt Jackson received the award from Major Lewis S. Norman during a ceremony held in Madrid, Spain, where Sgt. Jackson is assigned as a Jet Engine Overhaul Advisor to the Spanish Air Force. While stationed at tlie Greater Pittsburgh Airport in 1953, Sgt. Jackson designed and built a test stand which permitted accurate checking of jet engine performance before installation in an aircraft. The citation highlighted the savings realized by the Air Force by utilizing Sgt. Jackson’s new equipment. Sgt. Jackson has been serving with the United States Air Force since 1942 and was assigned to the Joint United States Military Group . in Spain in 1954. His present duties require daily contact with tlie Spanish Air Force personnel in the field of jet engine overhaul and maintenance. He is married to the former Althea Phillips, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Boy C. Phillips of BD1, Silver Lane, McKees Rocks, Pa. New ‘Y’ Secretary Miss Aldine Weaver, daughter of Mrs. Lawless A. ’Bob’ Weaver and the late Mr. Weaver, of 301 Grant Street, Sewickley, will become the new Program Secretafy of tlie Sewickley YMCA on September first. In her new responsibilities, she will have charge of tlie women and girls program, including die Tri-Hi-Y Clubs, the Teen-age Canteen, die Adult Special interest Classes and the Day Camps next summer. Aldine is a graduate of Sewickley High School in die class of 1951. She attended Pitt for one year, and finished her college work at Ohio Wesleyan College, ^ where she graduated with a B.S. Degree in June 1955. While in college she sang in die Ohio Wesleyan Glee Club. She majored in College in Religious Education, and lias a minor in Music. Miss Weaver is an active member of the Sewickley Metiiodist Church, and lias been assisting tiiere on a part time basis this summer. PARK PLAYGROUND CLOSING AUGUST IS The War Memorial Park playground, which has been very popular with die small fry this summer, will close, on Friday, August 19th. Tlie activities planned for die last week of supervised play by the Playground Director, William Zcralsky, include a treasure hunt on Wednesday afternoon and a hike on Thursday morning. Children interested in going on tlie hike should contact Mr. Zeralsky at die Park. The spray pool will continue to be open to 8 p, m. on Tuesday and» Thursday evenings until August 18th.
