The program Will be taken in steps and the improvements recommended will be made progressively so that the increase in cost will be absorbed gradually over a period of years. Incidentally, the total increased cost of tlie ‘ new street lighting on Beaver Street, Broad Street, and for 25 intersections in the Borough is only 22c per person per year—a little over the cost of a package of cigarettes. In addition to supplying electricity, tire Duquesne Light Company furnishes the equipment, assumes tlle responsibility for maintaining the street lighting system including relamping and periodic cleaning of the street lights. A prime factor which influenced Council on the question of improving the street lighting was the need for additional traffic safety at night. The former street lighting system was hot designed for modern traffic conditions involving greater volume and higher speeds. Furthermore, modern street lights are more efficient and direct a greater amount of light to the road surface. Visibility is materially improved and it is easier for motorists to see objects or pedestrians. Statistics show that almost 32,000 people were killed on the streets and highways of our country last year. The majority of these deaths occurred at •night despite the fact that traffic is lighter at that time than it is during daylight. Therefore, good street lighting is a definite aid to traffic safety and the municipal officials of Sewickley wanted to provide citizens with this added safety. It has been observed that there are more people on Beaver Street in the business area since the, new street lighting was installed. This is due to tire fact that people are attracted by light and feel safe when streets are well lighted. Our citizens now evidently enjoy night window shopping. Members of the Board of Trade and individual merchants are happy about the new street lighting on Beaver Street, because it has meant additional business for them. After all, it adds to Sewickley’s prosperity when our people do their shopping locally. A. E. Miller, chairman of the light committee and Charles Reott, the other local business man on council, were highly in favor of the new lighting. Spectacular improvement was made in the lighting on Broad Street and it is expected that the new lighting will expedite traffic flow and help to eliminate traffic accident hazards. In addition to increasing the light on tire roadway, the new street lights have lighted up die sidewalks. This factor gives a feeling of greater safety and people no longer hesitate to use this street at night. All in all, the new street lighting will belli to enhance the reputation Of Sewickley. The borough is recognized as a fine residential area and the new street lighting will mark it as progressive and up-to-date. Pageant nt Grade School The seventh grade pupils. of Sewickley Grade School will present a pageant, "What So Proudly We I-Iail” at the promotion exercises at 8 o’clock tonight (Thursday) in the Grade School auditorium. The program will include in- vocation by Reverend T. W. Eshenaur; greetings by Bill Cook, the class president; selections by Class 7-2; piano solos by Martha Tracey, Bob Smith and Grace Cherry and presentation of report and promotion cards. Ladycops Can Make Arrests The statement that ladycops, to be hired to watch school children, can not make arrests on view, as printed in The Herald of May 27th* was in error. According to Raymond Copeland, chairman of Sewickley Borough’s police committee, the ladycops will have that power. CALENDAR OF COMMUNITY EVENTS Thursday, June 10 8:00 p. m.
