MAY 18. 1928 Price 5 Gents. ,X-"i3 Mew building for Sewickle? -Academy The architect's conception of proposed new building for Sewickley Academy to be erected on the Houston estate in Academy Avenue, the present site of the upper Academy building. This and other improvements are expected to cost $350,000, to raise which a campaign is to be opened very soon. iiiiimii) Arrangements for financing the erection of a new building for Sewickley Academy on the grounds of the Houston estate, the present site Of the upper Academy building, are being completed, it was announced yesterday by members of tlie board of directors. The cost of the new building and a number of extensive repairs to tho grounds has been estimated at $350,000. The new building is in response to the growing demand for a private school in Sewiekley. The present Academy is in its third year and today there aro 221 children enrolled in its various classes from tho age of kindergarten to tho last year of high school. The sehool combines tho best featuros of the conservative and progressive privato institutions and is recognized as ono of tlio loading collego preparatory schools in this district. Sessions are now being held ih two buildings, the lowor school Wherein tho kindergarten and lowor school grades are instructed boing at 20 Thorn stroet, while the Upper school is located On tlio Houston estate. According to tho toiitntivo plans for the now building the classes in thoso two buildings will bo consolidated in the now strcutitrc. Twelve spacious and Woll lighted class rooms are provided in addition to a beautiful kindergarten, manual trai> ing department, scioiico department, li brary and a gymnasium which may bo converted into an auditorium with a seating capacity of 600. The auditorium it was announced may be usod for community entertainments. The new building will be well ventilated and heated and everything will be done for tho safety and health of the children enrolled thero. One Of the ground features will bo tlie grading of an athletic field permitting mass athletics necessary for the physical development of tho modern boy and girl. Alexander 0. Tener is chairman of tlio board of directors, which is active in completing plans for the erection of tho new building, Oharles H. Ourry is vice chairman, Oharles L. Hamilton, treasurer, and Oharlos A. Jones, secretary. Other member, of the board are: Morgan H. Bowman, Jr., Wilson A. Oanipboll, William S. Charnley, Robert L. Clause, J. Oonway Macon, Franklin T. Novin, "Francis B. Nimick, Ohauhcoy O 'Neil, Don Rose aiid James L. Stuart. Although the revival of tho prosont Academy dates back only to 1925, tho movement was first launched in Sewickloy in 1838 by John B, Champ, an Englishman and William M. Nevin. it held its Jlrst sessions in "The Brick Houso'j,. on Boaver road, Edgoworth, and flour- until 1841, when Itho building burned. Tho school was closed but a short tiino and Was reopened In the "Fife House" on Beaver road at Grove street, by the Rev. Joseph Travelli and continued sessions there until 1851 when that building too was burned. The Academy was then moved to the home of James Gray, now the Park Place Hotel where it operated until 1863 when the Civil War compelled its closing. Aftor tho war the Academy was again opened and classes conducted in the old brick church of the Presbyterian Congregation which was located opposite the site of tho present building. In 1878 John Way, Jr. opened an Academy, an English and classical school for boys and girls in which he introduced kindergarten, primary, intermediate and collego preparatory departments in addition to the cultural study Of art and music.
