"**E6gewortl")'s 3W $110,000 jpumpins Station r 016 Water Works to be 3W6 s The new $110,000 pumping station for the Edgeworth Water Company is practically completed except for some painting in the interior of the building and Tuesday afternoon the old station was turned over to the Pennsylvania railroad to be razed to make way for the new right of Av/iy. The now station is a beautiful buff and red 'brick building with a roof of red Mission tilos. Stone cornices, stone sills for the windows and elaborately decorated doorways add a great deal to the appearance of tho building, wliieh is locatod at the foot of Chestnut street, about ono hundred and fifty yards west of tho new railroad station. Tho lawn is already graded; being terraced on three sides and as soon as the grass is in and tho shrubbery planted, and tho 80 foot flagpole eroetod the plant will bo a real asset to the boauty of Edgoworth. Tho Water is taken from 12 Wells driven 40 _eet into tho ground. The bottom oight feet of tho 12 inch pipe is perforated with lj020 quarter-inch holes and the percentage of upper rivor water that finds its way into theso lioles is loss than two por cent, according to W. 0. Brock, superintendent of tho Edgoworth "Water Company. Tlio 16 inch suction lines run through a 4 x 5 foot tunnel from the river bank to tlio huge well under tho pumping station. This well lias an inside diameter of 35 foet; ami is 34 feot deep. A winding stair skirts tlio side of the concrete WalJ find allows employees to descend into tho bottom of the well where tlio pumps are locatod. There aro two pumps, ono is a now centrifugal pump drivon at 1,778 revolutions per minute by an electric motor, which in turn is operated from electricity from a 450 volt generator, which furnishes all of the power needed at the plant. Tho generator is driven by a 165 horse power _ cylinder, dual ignition Brute McBeth gasoline motor, which has an open head, overhead valves, two foot spark plugs and two magnetos, either one of which will operate the motor. The other pump is the auxiliary pump taken from the old station and is of tlio plunger typo. That is, the 125 horse power Westinghouse gasoliiiri motor turns flywheols which are connected with a power head from which connecting rods go down through the floor of tho engine room and operate pistons in cylinders in the pump, thirty odd feet bolow. Each pump is capable of pumping one million and a half gallons of water a day, so usually Only one of the pumps is kept busy for eight hours each day. Also in tho engine room aro found a seven and a half tone crane which runs across the room on huge steel tracks j a Cochran flow meter With a capacity Of 2,400,000 gallons a day; an oloctric driven vacuum pump which is used to got the air out of the water lines j and (Continued on Pago Throe) *-** l;.. .11
