-5 3 The Herald The Sewickley Valley's Home-News Weekly Vol. XXVI. No, 45, SEWICKLEY, PA., FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 1929 Price 5 Cents Scenes on tfye beautiful ^ttuskoka TLakes Upper left: Beaumaris Hotel, on Lake Muskoka, showing the Yacht Club on the right of the hotel and the wharf on the left. Upper right: A speed boat cutting through the waters of Lake Eosseau. Lower left: A picturesque island on Lake Joseph. Lower right: A palatial summer home on Lake Muskoka, illustrating the huge granite rocks which underlies all the islands. A' ON FOOT IN ONTABIO Our Hitch-Hiking Correspondent Continues His Pilgrimage Monday evening aftor I had lauded at Beaumaris I ■walked along a dirt road back of tho hotel which curved and twisted through tho cool green depths of the woods. Birds chirped, insects hummed, the far off roar of a speedboat receded into tho silent distance and tho bright sun made great splotches of gold on tho forest floor. At dinnor that evening, and the Beaumaris Hotel is famous throughout tho entire lake district for its good meals, I was introduced to Oharles J. "McCarthy of Toronto, who had been playing thirty-six holes of golf a day for two weeks, Ho had formerly rowed With tho Argonaut crew of Toronto, so it was only natural that wo should go for a row after dinnor. Out on the lake tho cool breezes wore slapping up waves but wo pushed on into the glorious sunset for about a mile then turned into Milford Bay Where Cedar Wild lies bosido tho lapping wators. To mako a novel into a short story wo had a date with two girls who wore staying there, Then, whoii tho proper time came, wo rowed back on water shimmering liko quicksilver beneath a bright half moon. Every so often tho red, green and white lights of a speeding motor boat would approach ancl we would quickly hold aloft burning ■matches to ward off a possible collision, The next morning, aftor a short but sweet swim, I ran for tlle Sagamo steamboat which takes a 100 mile cruise around tho threo lakes. Going up the placid Indian.Biver to Port Carling I saw a small bird attack a heron, which was standing on one foot in marshy ground along tho bank. Tho bird would dart down, peck at tho heron's head and fly away before tho larger bird could raise his cumbcrsomo beak to strike. Finally thc heron flapped away, his tormentor flying close, overhead, every once in a whilo taking a peck at the larger bird. At Port Carling, as the whistle sounded our approach to tho locks, a couplo of youths carrying a Y shaped pipo Walked to tho middlo of tho bridge and using the pipe as a loyor, slowly turned the bridge back far enough to allow us to pass by. . Then tho captain of tho boat and the Chief Of polico of "Port Carling heaved on a similar pipo on tho lock wail opening the gates into tho lock. An orchestra, that is a pianist, a fiddler and a drunimor, started to play popular airs as soon as we came within hearing distance of tho Port and continued the process at every stop. However, as soon as the boat pulled away from tho dock tho musie and dancing ceased until the next stop was made. The lock walls at Port Carling were lined with summer residents, who all came down to watch tho boat go through thc ancient locks. At that moment I saw something which mado me make up my mind to stay at tho Port for a .day at least, but for the day I was satisfied to glide along ovor the dark wators watching tho green trees and rock shores slide past "beneath a cloudless sky. Numerous cottages and hotols peered out from among tho birch and pine trees both on the many islands and on the mainland. Tho folks on board wore very friendly and gay, commenting on tho attractiveness of tho landscape or their neighbor with equal promptitude. Gulls wheeled endlessly about tho vessel, plunging into tho lako and fighting among themselves for tho crusts of broad and refuse thrown from the boat. The boat stoppod for half ah hour at .Natural J?ark, Lake Joseph, where it was mot by an Indian in full regalia. I don't know what ho was Selling but it was amusing to see him pound on a tom-tom while his companion executed a rwar dance on tho wharf as the boat -was pulling out. Natural Park has a great many largo and interesting rocks, that is, if one is interested in rocks. Ono would imagine he were in Hollywood, so many cameras clicked as we passed some particularly attractive island. Spocd boats, sail boats and canoes were also the targets of many snaps although it was not easy to dctermino whether any of them had been hit. At the Boyal Muskoka a girl was swimming when the boat pulled in. She splashed out to the rudder and stood on it balancing herself by the rudder chain hanging down from tho stern Of tho boat. As the boat started to reverse she dived off the ruddor and began to Swim in the same direction the boat was going. The mate happened to bo oii tho dock and shouted to tho captain to put full steam ahead, just in time to avoid running ovor tho girl, who was being drawn toward tho boat by the suction of the propellor. In tho oxcitement the mate Was left on the dock aiid it Avas necessary to land again to tako hiin on. (Continued on Page 3) •» i • ' i n ■A Ttl *y yi .♦.tj >, ( ____H___i
