How easy to imagine it a parable of our anxious yet hopeful scanning of the outlook for 19331 Tho near scene looks pretty arid, one must admit; not much of "prosperity" visible, nor of opportunity for useful or profitable development—at least without a lot of "liquidation." Not even much assurance of human sustenance for any length of time, as most of us see it; and nobody in sight to give "employment." But Burton Holmes looks farther ahead, as must we; and it will be strange if lie doesn't visualize something that can he turned to use,t made interesting and even romantic, with the help of ingenuity and probably hard work, coupled with'"knowledge of human nature and human needs. We can be sure the. prospect offers possibilities of which aclyantage may bo taken somehow, given the will to find the way and to work it out. Those distant, mysterious hills, forbidding as they appear, may contain gold, or more useful ore, or precious water and glades and glens of grass and trees and food-plants; perhaps game, or may be, just good shelter and a place to settle and found a self-sustaining homestead. Who can tell?—But it's worth going ahead, climbing the steeps as you come to them, and find out. It may take determination and unfailing courage, and there may even be risks now and then; but the opportunity is there—it must be there-—and it's most likely far better than ono could possibly see at this distance. Forward, then, into tlio New Year, with purpose fixed and hopes high! Can't we see all that, as we look at this striking picture? It wasn't intended for this use, of course; it camo through Miss Helen Burns, who is sponsor for Burton Holmes's series of .Sewickley lectures whieh begin next week, and was for the purpose of calling attention to them. But we looked at it, and got to thinking—. Yes, it's a good picture for New Year—this New Year. IMta^HHJ
