SEWICKLEY, PA., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1938 Price 5 Cents *3fa?5vllle's 5tew School building ) 'muiww. i— .nnl)))mp Evidence that the 'little red sehool- Jiouse' has also experienced many- changes is presented by the photographs of the modern one-room sehool recently completed and' now occupied by the pupils of Haysville. The^pic- turcs show the smart lines of tho brick building, the large windows on one side of it, and the largo, level playground, protected by wire fenco. Not apparent in -tho photographs, but highly appreciated by the pupils, are the thermostatically controlled gas- burning hot air furnaco with air-conditioning, located in a small concrete- finished basement instead of the old furnace in the middle of the classroom; the daylight streaming through the steel casement windows and' reflected on the white plaster; tho electric clock above, the blackboards; tho modern plumbing; the spacious cloakroom; the seats that may be moved; tho modern lighting system. There is an emergency door on ono side, of tho building, and attractivo glass panels in the doors of the short hall between tho entrance door, which is protected from the. weather, and tho door to tho classroom, Over tho entrance is tho name of the school in cast aluminum letters, another of the rigid State specifications fol* lowcct In the building of tho School. Pupils vie for the honor of raising and lowering the flag on the pole in the playground, which has been covered with slag to provide a good surface. The now building is equipped with fifty seats, so that it will take care of more students than attend at tho present time. This now, modern school did not cost the taxpayers of Haysvillo school district a penny, except indirectly through county taxes, as Allegheny County paid the Haysville school board $13,000 for damages in tearing down the old white frame building and' using the lot for the new section of the Ohio Eiver Boulevard. School taxes in Haysville are levied at a rate of 11 mills, sufficient to pay all the. operating expenses and salaries of the school district. Allegheny County is being billed for $1,023.06, the final installment of the $13,000, and with their State appropriation due, the board' will ha.ve sufficient funds until 193S taxes start coming in. Sewickley contractors did most of the work on the new building. Nagel & Ague had the general contract, at $7,117; Edward Yant tho heating contract nt $700; the Sewickloy Plumbing & Heating Company did tho plumbing work, amounting to $383.51; and the roofing was supplied by Carey, through tho Hegner Hardwaro Company. Lumber and millwork was furnished by Ered! J. JIcMDlen; tho face brick and concrete materials by the Standard Builders Supply Co. of Leetsdale; and William H. LoEoy Of Sc- widkley did the painting. The lot cost the school district $4,000 but that, too^ was covered by tho damages paid by the county. -tlueh as they liko their new building, tho pupils will probably become slightly irked next Juno when thoy will have to attend classes to maho up tho time lost last fall. ______________
