Th e era Id The Sewickley Valley's Home-News Weekly Vol, 33. No. 36. SEWICKLEY, PA., THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 1939 Price 5 Cents Mountain Pioneer a Guide in Newest National Park The Misses Martha Vierebome and Annette Ogle, tourists who drove up the recently-opened federal highway from Gatlinburg, Tenn., into the heart of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, were thrilled at having for their guide "Uncle George" Lemons, 84-year-old patriarch of the mountains, who trod the same path with "hog" rifle and traps when it was a mere Cherokee Indian trail. The Park, soon to be formally dedicated by the President, is the newest of the National Parks. It is destined to become a mecca for millions of motorists. mm NO RE-HEARING Zone Board Refuses Plea of Apartment Objectors In an opinion dated August 3, 1939, the Sewiekley zoning board of adjustment, by Malcolm Hay, secretary, denied the petition filed on July 29th for a re-hearing of the objections to the granting of a permit for tho Bennett Construction Co.'s proposed apartment house. Main basis for the petition was the fact that on July 19 the Sewiekley borough council finally passed an amendment to the zone ordinance which would prevent orcetion of any such apartnlont building in the (future. For the amendment would require 2,250 square feet of lot area for each family accommodated, and on this basis the proposed building eould tako care of but 16 families, not 42 as now intended. So, averring that but little money has been expended by the building company in ireliftnce on the permit granted, the appellants, James H. Austin, Jr., and others, ask a rehearing to object to tho granting of the permit in that it docs not comply with the "present zoning ordinance." In refusing tho hearing, the opjnion says: "Since the original application was made and granted before the amending ordinance was even introduced, and since there has been no deliberate attempt to circumvent a pending ordinance, it is the opinion of the Board of Adjustment that tho said amending ordinance cannot affect tho permit which has been granted and modified (by eliminating the garage feature originally objected to) in this case." Whether money has been spent on the project was declared immaterial. School Board Buys House Carnival Day At North Park Another house and lot was acquired by the Edgeworth School Board at its regular meeting Monday night. The lot is located on School Street, adjoining the playground at the end closest to Chestnut Street. Five other houses purchased by tho board have been sold at auction and torn doiwn with everything removed. Only the foundations need filling to lovel off the lots, Ton- ant's are still occupying three more houses no.w owned by the school district. A midsummer carnival day is being sponsored by the Board of County Commissioners, John J. Kane, Chairman, George Rankin, Jr., and John S. Her- ron, at North Park, Sunday, August 13. Tho National Gypsy Motorcycle Tour will bring over 300 motorcyclists from all over the tri-state area. They wall assemble at the "Woods" athletic field in the afternoon and give an exhibition of trick and fancy riding. This group of motorcyclists constitutes the finest performers in their field and their program promises a spectacular display of riding. Sunday evening, "Javor," tho Croatian Singing Society under tho dircc ition of Professor Boris Dobrovlsky, will present a â– convert on the "Woods Grove" stage. The program thoy offer is varied and will nppenl to all musie lovers. To add to tho attractiveness of the scone thoy will appear in the Croatian national costume. On July Fourth this choral group won first place at the All Nations Festival in Schonley Bark. Tho Shellby Tamfeorltza Orchestra will also pni'tcipato on this pro gram. This well known orchestra will help round out an evening of real music that should be appreciated by everyone. All the North Park facilities will be the scone of special activities throughout the day. There will be archery contests, swimming, boating, golf, tennis and dancing. The park personnel is prepared to handle one of the largest crowds of tho season. Parking space and picnic areas will ibo available to overyone. At close of ithe Carnival events there will be an aerial display of fireworks at tho "Woods Grove" field. It is to bo a gala day and tho board of County Commissioners, John J. Kane, George Rankin, Jr., and John S. Her- ron, invite everyone to visit North Park and join in the festivities. Correction In tho picture of Campers of camp "Yowocha" published on the front page of last week's Herald: In the first row reading from the left, the fifth child is Juno Eppley instead of Patty Lynch. Patty Lynch was also a camper, but was absent when tho picture was taken,
