(These Photographs by Thomas Toia) SEWICKLEY S FESTIVAL Garden and Needlework Exhibits Featured Popular Gathering Great yellow pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers, lettueo, celery and tomatoes unlimited, all wore displayed in colorful and appetizing array in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium Labor Day afternoon and evening, fruit of the toil of many a bcal^ Victory gardener, a, creditable showing indeed. But that was only part ot the attraction that brought the people thero in numbers limit crowded building and the grounds adjacent Until lato in tho evening. Thero wero exhibits of pies and cakes and "baked goods of all sorts in ono of the rooms, canned and bottled fruit and vegetables iii another, and a most interesting collection of needlework art and handcraft triumphs in another, all well worth tho seoing and admiring. Tltoi'o wot'o things for sale aisoj jellies and fruits, cakes and pics, hot dogs and refreshing soft drinks, on the side porch of the building,' there, also was tlio "Slsh pond" so popular with tho children that it was -Jlshod out in an hour oi' two; and in. a lino of booths sot up "Car the tennis courts wore half a dozen Midway" concession booths — dart tl'i'ow, baseball in a barrel, a fortune teller, and what not, all .manned by Kiwanians, and surrounded constantly by young and older contestants trying their skill, A bit of light rain in tho evening prt and on, was not sufficient to dampen their enthusiasm or drive them indoors. Most popular sport for the younger children was the pony-ride, two beautiful piebald ponies, being led around the lawn up near tho Annex; au.l in the afternoon, somo wonderful horseshoe pitching games and exhibition throwing, by 'George Curry of Monessen, State champion, and Harold: Gambo of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Horseshoe CoimUiteo chairman, Amazing, tho -kill with which ringers were thrown with uncanny regularity. In tho evening a gay iparado starting at tho Broad Street sehool conducted the elected Queen of tho Harvest and her unsuccessful rival candidates up to the fair grounds. Tho sixteen girls wero mounted on a decorated truck, a pretty sight for any ono to seo; they were preceded by the Scwickley high school band, and by Sewickloy and Osborne Girl Scouts in green uniforms; flanked by white-clad (least Guard men, followed by Boy Scouts and by tho Sowickley Valley Post No. 4, Amorican Legion men, whoso mighty efforts had voted (Continued on Pago 3) Th0 nrnwd surrounds the High School Band and parading imitgiasJhe_QUeen is cf owned
