SEWICKLEY, PA., THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 1942 Price 5 Cents 3Jffipy*iT*ip^KM,M-p «L "Scanning tl>e Sky' faami"»w"*--"'--""a On Our Observation Post Recently upon the completion of tho permanent Observation Post atop the First National Bank Building, a groutf of I/egionnaires from Post 4 went up to make an inspection. One of the members of the Post Home Association, Paul Bower of the Sun-Telegraph, came along and took tho above picture of the group. The identifications are as follows: Standing (left to right) W. P. McCrea, D. J. Rattelsdorfer, William E. Evans, Charles Gordon (Post Commander—with glasses), William White, Edmund Hill and Charles H. Eaton; Kneeling, loft to right, Dale Park and Harry Sanders. This Observation Post was erected at the request of 'tho War Department and was financed jointly by the Sewickley Home Dofonso Organization and Sewickley Valley Post 4, Tho American Legion. Air Raid Drill At School The first air raid drill was conducted at tlie Sewickley schools on Monday afternoon at three o'clock, when the pupils, escorted in groups by then' teachers, went home 'when the signal sounded. Notes were carried home to be signed by parents and it was found that the child living the grea'test distance from tho school took 27 minutes to reach homo. Supervising Principal L. H. Conway reported to the Civilian Defense Council at their weekly meeting in 'the Sewickley borough building Tuesday evening, that tho schools woro now organized and ready. In case of a real air raid, it is expected that .at leas't an hour's warning will bo given and that will permit the children to bo taken home. Experience in England has shown that people are safer at home than in lingo shelters. In some cases where the pupils live out-of-town, parts of the grade and high school buildings will be utilized as shelters. Mr, Conway also reported that a clastt for first aid training for girls had been started in the high school on Tuesdays and Fridays and that forty-five started 'taking the course the first day. In addition, about 150 persons havo signed up for the Red Cross first aid training course in the high school building for adults from 7:30 p. m. to 0:30 p. in. Wednesday evenings with H. B. Winne instructing. Tho Motor Mechanics course attracted about 52 young ladies who wish to learn how to repair and keep automobiles in condition, Monday evening nt the J. F. Mackay garage on Broad Street and it is likely that tho Bed Cross will have to split" the class into two sections. Miss Sara Woods is in charge for tho Red Cross nnd Clarence Barton, service manager of the garage, is the instructor. First Aid Course At Edgeworth About thirty men, mostly those named as ail* raid wardens for Edgeworth borough, are taking a 20 hour Red Cross first aid course at the Edgeworth sehool on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Mrs. Robert Standish is chairman of the Red Cross committee in charge of the course. Two teachers of the Edgeworth School will complete their instructor's course by a week from Saturday and shortly thereafter it is planned to start another first aid course for both men and women. Osborne Defense Registration Osborne residents registered for civilian defense on Friday and Saturday, according to Herbert E. Marks, Jr., chairman of tho Osborne Civilian Defense Council, which will meet soon to set up various committees and appoint clminuen.
