The Herald The Sewickley Valley's Home News Weekly Vol. 38, No. 36. SEWICKLEY, PA., THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 1941 Price 5 Cents .-Approved War ^tlemorial Statue While nothing further has been done, due to vacations and the necessity for legal study on the part of the school board's solicitor, the photograph above illustrates a model of the memorial statue proposed by the plans and costs committee of the Sewickley Valley War Memorial Association at a recent meeting in the home of Mrs. Alexander Laughlin, chairman of the committee. The model is the work of Frank Vittor, Pittsburgh sculptor, and was chosen over a seated figure of Columbia. In this statue, the flag-draped figure of Columbia stands on a pedestal behind the young soldier, who is holding his great sword ready to defend her. Since a statue of this sort would not be suitable for the triangle at the foot of Broad Street, at the Boulevard, it is proposed that it be placed on the grade school lawn, diagonally across from the Methodist Church. The statue would have to be approved by the Art Commission of Pennsylvania, if placed on public property and would become the property of the school board, if the board is legally allowed to accept it. With title to the memorial vested in the school board, it could be moved if that ever became necessary, due to the future growth of the school and the necessity of building a new grade school building. A new building would probably be located nearer to Broad Street, in order to increase the present inadequate playground space at the rear of the school. The next step in procedure will be for the American Legion to present their clock-tower memorial model to the plans and costs committee. Then the committee, which has already provisionally approved the statue, will recommend the memorial it considers most suitable to the membership of the association at a general meeting. Commander Charles H. Eaton of Post 4, American Legion, has suggested that the Vittor model be placed on public display like the clock-tower and the public asked to choose between the two proposed memorials. The Legion is prepared to pay the expense of a public ballot to discover which memorial the public prefers, for any memorial should have the approval of the citizens.
