SEWICKLEY, PA., THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1941 Price 5 Cents RETAILERS-FOR-DEFENSE WEEK September 15 to 20, 1941 Defense Savings Program A million stores from coast to coast are selling Defense Savings Stamps in the biggest retail sales effort on record. Sewickley stores, with the recommendation of the Board of Trade, -will take active part in this National Defense- Stamp Week, September 15 to 20. A report of this nation-wide extension of retail outlets for tho sale of Defense Savings Stamps, was made to Secretary Morgenthau by Maj. Benjamin H. Namm, Chairman of the Treasury's Ketail Advisory Committee. This committee, whicli includes representatives of tho l'l great national retail associations, has pledged complete cooperation to the Treasury in connection with "Retailors-for-Dofenso" Week, instituting the sale of Stamps in stores everywhere. During the week—from September, 15 through September 20—spocial demonstrations including parados, bancl concerts, fireworks displays and numerous other events arc planned for communities in all sections of tho Nation ■■ '"»))»9 to mark the inauguration of Defense Stamp sales in a vast national program by merchants everywhere. In his report to the Secretary, Major Namm pointed out that the immense increase in the number of retail outlets for the sale of Defense Savings Stamps means that more than two and one-half million employees of retail stores havo enlisted as salesmen for Uncle Sam. With retail stores in every city, town and hamlet selling V. S. Defense Stamps, Major Namm declared that the Government has enlisted a selling force in this endeavor bigger than tho combined Army, Navy and Marine Corps. '"riiis is tho greatest national effort ever made in behalf of one product in retail history," Major Namm said. "We cannot underestimate tho tro- moudous part -which the retail store employees aro playing in this important undertaking. All of us arc. making it our patriotic duty to havo these stamps available for purchase by everyone. We want to make Defense Savings Stamps the easiest possible product to buy. These Stamps, as everyone knows, can be saved conveniently in handy albums, and later exchanged for Defense Savings Bonds. "The purpose of the Defense Savings Program is three-fold: the money we invest in Bonds and Stamps buys essential equipment for our armed forces; buying Bonds will help to prevent inflation; and after the war the savings represented by Defense Bonds will provide a cushion for the period of readjustment. "I can assure you that National Re- tailers-for-Defense Week is merely the opening gun in a program that will be a continuing, steadily increasing effort on tho part of the retail merchants of the land, We shall sell Defense Savings Stamps in retail-stores the country over —not alone during National Retailers- for-Dofense Week, but every day and every week so long as the national emergency exists. Wo have promised our wholehearted support of the Do- fenso Savings Program. We shall not fail." In many cities and towns, Defense Savings Stamps liave been on sale in retail stores for several months. Many companies, national in scope, have been' selling them as a convenience to thois customers. In. Michigan, the stamps have been on sale through 22,000 retail outlets since July 10. In addition to support from scores of chain store outlets, the Defense Savings Program is also receiving help offered voluntarily by many thousands of independent retail grocers, druggists, jewelers, furniture stores, hardware dealers, dry goods companies and various other merchants. Among the many nationally known concerns .active in promoting Stamp sales to aid the Defense Savings program are The Great Atlantic -and Pacific Tea 'Company; Wited Cigar-Whelnn Company; Sears, Roebuck and Company; Montgomery Ward and Company; W. T, Grant Company; -S. S. Krcsgo and Company; McCrory Stores Corporation; P. W. Wool worth Company; and J. O. Penny Company. iftflhBlMiii
