Bell Acres mayor says Tm sorry' to police officer Bernice Ewanko By Jerry Pelley Staff writer A part-time Bell Acres police officer got a public apology last week from her boss, Mayor Floyd McKeivey, as the police department overturned a suspension she received in _ February. McKeivey read in official letter of apology to Officer Bernice Ewanko at last week’s Bell Acres Council meeting, stating: “All reference to that suspension is stricken from your personal record. “It is my hope that, in the future* such misunderstandings can be avoided.” The admission by the mayor was a victory for Officer Ewanko, who threatened the borough and the police.depart-ment with a lawsuit if the suspension was not rescinded. In February, Officer, Ewanko was given a three-day suspension by the department, which charged her with leaving the borough unattended. Officer Ewanko left the borough during the early morning hours of Feb. 14 to rush her husband, Philip, to Sewickley Valley Hospital after he had complained of ab-domenal pains. Mr. Ewanko, 70, had previously been treated for cancer and periodically suf- fered from intestinal blockages, which, if not quickly treated, could be fatal, she said. The police department suspended Officer Ewanko for three days — Feb. 17,20 and 21 — but paid her during the suspension. Also, despite the suspension, she did in fact work on the 20th and 21st, But the suspension was on her record. “There was no investigation,” Officer Ewanko said of the suspension. “There wasn’t a hearing. The borough solicitor, John .Rumin, told council that they couldn’t suspend me without a hearing.” Moreover, the officer said, her departure to the hospital did not leave the borough without police protection. “I called Leetsdale police and got them to cover for me,” she said. “Officer (Edward) Cross took the call and watched Bell Acres while I taking my husband to the hospital.” Holiday season gets under way Thanksgiving service tonight, Santa cornin' to town Saturday Sewickley begins its Thanksgiving weekend with a joint service by the Sewickley Ministerium tonight, and the Christmas season officially gets under way on Saturday with a parade and visit from St. Nick.
