Jim Anderick accompanied the Sewicklejf delegation to the conference. Mrs. Dawn Seagren is club advisor. The girls will assume their officer responsibilities with the beginning of the club year in die fall." , Leetsdale Girl Stars i A scene Glenwiilard Golfer Killed By lightning Edward J./Hudac, aged 35, of 415 Hart Drive, 'Glenwiilard, a barber at Greater Pittsburgh Airport, was killed by lightning- about 4 p.m. while playing golf on the Venango Trail Golf Course, R.D. No. 1, Mars. He was golfing with his brother-in-law, Thomas Hopkins of - Sewickley, when the bolt struck. They had just finished the 16th bole and teed off on the 17th, with Mr. Hudac pulling a golf cart. Mr. Hopkins said that they decided to leave the course when storm clouds threatened and a few drops of rain fell. They were, walking towards the clubhouse and Mr, Hopkins told State Police Sergeant Henry C. Sagley that he was in front ’of Mr. Hudac when he “heard a sound like a shotgun.1 He looked back and saw Mr- Hudac on die ground, Mr, Hopkins was not injured by the lighting bolt. Marshall Township firemen were summoned and attempted artificial respiration, but-apparently Mr. Hudac was killed instantly. Mr. Hudac was an enthusiastic golfer and played every Sunday with his brother-in-law, who lives on-R.D. No. 3, Sewickley. Mr. Hudac is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doris Hopkins Hudac, two daughters, Marlene and Faythe; a son, Jerry; his mother, Mrs. Mary Jurena; his stepfather, Rudolph Jurena: a sister, Mrs. Helen Keppel and a brother, Rudolph Jurena, Jr., all of Pittsburgh and -three step-sisters, Mrs. Marie Farrell of Pittsburgh and Mrs. Betty Lu-piaski and Mrs. Victoria Jenkins,, bodi of Aberdeen, Maryland. Friends were received at the Irvine Funeral Home, 702 Beaver Street, where funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon. Interment *» -—- **—. “Summer and Siripke”, the Tennessee Williams Saga of two ill-starred lovers, current production at the Chippewa Playhouse, Brighton Township, Beaver. Alma, played by Janet MacDonald of Lark Inn Fields, Leetsdale, and John, Robert Fogg of Beaver Falls, iiieet for the first time. Miss MacDonald recently played the title role in “Kiss Me, Kate” at Chippewa* Registration At ' Leetsdale And Glenfield Tuesday On Tuesday, August 14, from Noon until BrOO p.m,, registrars from the Allegheny County Department • of Elections will conduct field registration at the Grade School, Beaver and • Spencer Streets, Leetsdale and at die Fire Hall in Glenfield. New‘registrations, reinstatements for loss for reason of not having voted for. two years and change of address can all be handled at these convenient registrations. The registrars will service all residents of Sewickley Valley, in fact, any voter from Allegheny County. A field registration is also planned for Ohio Township on Thursday, August 16, at die Fire Hall, 1520 Rooso-,/vclt Road. , J Second Place In World Skeef Shoot MRS. IIARTON SINGER, HI, LOSES IN SHOOT-OFF Mrs. G. Harton Singer, III, of Sewickley, earned the runner-up spot in tlie women’s ,20 gauge event in the World’s Skcct Shooting Championships held at Montreal; Canada, from July 29 to August 4. Mrs. Singer tied Miss Kndilcen McGinn of Dallas, Texas, at die end of the regulation 100 clay targets, each woman breaking 98 targets, the top two scores among the 50 women competing. In the first shoot-off for the tide, Mrs. Singer and Miss McGinn tied ■again, this time breaking 24 of 25 targets. In tho second shoot-off, Mrs. Singer repeated with 24 of 25 while Miss McGinn came through with a perfect 25 of 25 to win tho chain-(Continued on Page 6) was in Sewickley Cemetery. , Great Excitement Over Little Fire The Sewickley fire siren blew and blew and the street siren at Beaver and Broad wailed and wailed at 4:55 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7th. Two of Sewicldey’s fire trucks raced .down Beaver to Academy, followed -by stream of cars and bicycles. Along about that time the Aleppo tank truck drove along Beaver Street, leading many persons to believe that a real bad fire was in progress. However, tho Aleppo truck h a d come down for gas or repairs, for it wasn’t involved at all. One of SeWickley’s pumpers went up the long driveway of Woodland Road at Pine to the house of Francis B. Nimick, Jr., while the old pumper stopped on Woodland, ready to relay water, if.-the fire was bad. Firemen found the basement of the Nimick house full of smoke, but the smoke was all coming from an old fashioned gas Simplex ironer, _ the wooden roll of which was burning and creating a considerable amount of smoke, Firemen shut off -tire gas, disconnected tho ironer and carried it outside where the burning roller was extinguished. That Cvoning, Sewickley council-men and Edgeworth* firemen witnessed a demonstration of a 750-gallon pumper-equipped aerial ladder truck on tlio Sowickley Elementary School playground. Tho 65-foot ladder was used as a chinning bar by firemen while extended its full length and it was also put up against tho roof of -the school building. Firemen then climbed up to tho roof, Meets Saturday On Condemnation Plans Being Drawn to Furnish Water to Quaker Village Shopping Center and Hussey Company Edgeworth Municipal Water Authority, at its regular meeting Monday nighty set Saturday at 10 a.m. as the time of a special meeting to take action on the condemnation of rights-of-way for a new' main off Camp Meeting Road and for a new line to the Little Sewickley Creek Pumping Station. Attempts to negotiate • both rights-of-way have met with failure, the Board was told, so Attorney' Carl M, Kerchner and Engineer William J. Murdoch were authorized to draw up" the necessary legal papers to set the condemnation proceedings in motion. Engineer Murdoch reported that he had half a dozen meetings with the architects for the proposed Quaker Village Shopping Center, between Beaver Road and the Ohio River Boulevard, discussing both the water supply and sewage lines for the center. Target date for completion of the center is February 1st, the Authority was informed. The C. T. Hussey Company plant is expected to be ready for operation in 1963, employing between 300 and 400 persons and using 160,000 gallons of water a day for the presses. Cooling water will be pumped from wells. th Mr. Murdoch reported that "Hussey Company officials were informed that the Authority could serve them with water for the presses, but not -for cooling, since the quantity of water needed for cooling is more than the Capacity of the entire water system. Well water will be used for cooling and in case of emergency, .the Authority could supply enough for an hour or two cooling. Tests Will be made, Mr. Murdoch reported, since it- may be necessary to lay a new line under the railroad tracks to serve the new plant. The -firm is ’ not interested in sewage service at this time and will continue to use the existing septic tanks for the time being. The developers of the Quaker Village Shopping Center are negotiating with Edgeworth Borough on rights-of-way; on a stub water main to eventually serve Little Sewickley Creek area; and -also for a piece of property owned by the borough which is in the shopping center site. Plans for the water supply are completed, but the sewage problem more complicated with several houses on Beaver Road and the High School to be considered. At present tlie sewage from the high school is pumped up the Beaver Road sewer. John Seifarth of Murdoch’s office, stopped at the meeting after attending tlie Leetsdale Authority meeting. He stated? that it would be necessary to condemn a piece of tlie Rogoff property in order to lay water line to tlie sewage pumping station at Little Sewickley Creek, Mr. Kerchner and Mr. Murdoch were requested to have the legal papers ready for the Saturday meeting. ‘The other property, which the Authority agreed must be condemned, is on Buhlmont Drive, off Gamp Meeting Road. Dr. and Mrs, John Gaydos and Dr, and Mrs. Regis Ging attended the ‘meeting and Dr. Ging informed the board that negotiations had been going on for four months and fivo property owners had signed releases for a right-of-way*but another refused and another wanted two free taps and relief from the assessments of costs of tho line along their property. Investigation of the cost of wells was made, also, and they decided that putting die cost of wells into a water main would be better arrangement, Dr. Gaydos said there should be some justice and Some way of getting water to the new houses they aro building. Also, in excavating for lie foundation, t h o Hyde private jtl: water line was uncovered and he would like to get the line away from the foundation. Water -from the line, is being used for construction and a temporary connection is giving- the Hyde’s water. Mr. Murdoch wrote a letter to tlie board on the subject, recommending condemnation and Mr. Kerchner wrote a letter to the -board giving the history of the private water line in that area. Mr. Kerchner said that the property owners who refused to sign the right-of-way agreement. Mr. and Mrs. Melford Anderson, want to pay a $100 tap-in fee and want the $500 deposit they paid for a tap-in on Camp Meeting Road line returned. On the other side of the private road, tlie David Genter’s had refused to grant a right-of-way unless' they received two free taps and were released from any liability for the foot frontage cost of tlie line.
