A Tradition Since 1903 VOLUME 106, ISSUE 24 A Gateway Newspaper AN EDITION OF TRIB TOTAL MEDIA www.yoursewickley.com 412-324-1403 6 ",B473971153440"11 6 Sign design prompts debate at meeting By Bobby Cherry STAFF WRITER Local residents and business owners showed signs of disagreement at a meeting about helping outsiders find their way into Sewickley. “This project is a classic case of the cart before the horse,” said Sewickley resident Fred Sharp. “Sewickley’s biggest problem is its long-term retail decline.” But Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce President Phil Harris said signs directing travelers off Route 65—the Sewickley region's busiest thoroughfare—and into the business district will help spur development. “Not everybody knows where Sewickley is,” Continued on Page 3 Program to teach seniors about scams By Bobby Cherry STAFF WRITER After a recent reoccurrence of scams in the area, Sewickley police officers are stepping up efforts to keep senior citizens from becoming victims. “Anyone can be affected by scams, but it does tend to happen with the elderly more often,” Officer Dave Mazza said. “We want to help them learn what can be done to protect themselves against scams.” The first crime, prevention event will be held June 17 at 6 p.m. in the Sewickley Public Library community room. In April, a Sewickley resident received a letter claiming he won a $250,000 lottery through a number of chain retailers, Mazza said. Bank officials were skeptical of the $4,000 check accompanying the letter and would not cash it, he said. “These crimes happen daily, and sometimes people do wjint to believe they're true,” Mazza said. Mazza also plans to speak about the county-wide 911 system and how residents can dial the emergency number for all situations. “The only way to get in touch with a police officer is to call 911,” he said. “Some people have been hesitant in calling 911 for situations they don't deem as a Continued on Page 3 647397534406
