(Photo by Mike May) Avonworth explores GV merger Insi<te I By Michelle Coccoli Avonworth School District, suffering lirom a sagging enrollment and aging polities, is discussing merger with I Quaker Valley School District and three [others. It is also looking at the possibili-I ty of paying tuition to educate its 984 [students, K-12. ; The proposal is part of a broad | feasibility study- now under way. The [Superintendents from the four school | districts involved — Quaker Valley, | North Hills, North Allegheny and Nor-? togate—all agree, they will take time to study the options. * Avonworth School District Board I agreed to undertake the exploratory ef-| fort at a Dec. 1 meeting. Superintendent pr, Martha Johnston was authorized to [ contact the other superintendents for a [ Am?onse Pri°r t° January 1987. I Although letters explaining the situation are now being sent from Dr. Johnston, I personal contacts already have been [made. Quaker Valley Superintendent Dr. [Leroy Kite said his district is always I open to a study, after which conclusions [ would be made. At this point, Kite said, |tftere is not enough information to for-[mujate an opinion. I North Allegheny’s superintendent Dr. j wry Bozzomo said the bottom line is that his district is “always willing to ex-plore any idea that would benefit North Allegheny and the children.” “We value Avonworth as a neighbor and would like to see it survive as a district,” he said. But Bozzomo said if Avonworth decides its best alternative is a merger, “North Allegheny owes it to our school district, our taxpayers and our children to give whatever proposal Avonworth offers serious consideration.” Dr. Joshua Geller, North Hills superintendent, agreed. Being a neighboring district and community, North Hills wants to be of assistance, Geller said. The idea itself, Geller said, needs to be studied and explored in detail. Northgate Superintendent Dr. James Manley said although he has not discussed the matter formally with his school board, he believes a merger would “be out of the question.” Manley said the reason is Northgate does not provide a busing system, virtually eliminating advantages for the district since Avon-worth buses its students. However, the idea of tuitioning may have some merits to Northgate, according to Manley, because of the declining enrollment figures in the secondary school. Manley said tuitioning. Bonner added that the board “sees nothing wrong with asking for some type of response,” be it school’s interest or request for more time to study the idea. Bonner also said the “only thing that could conceivably lead” the board to consider the tuition idea is if “some astronomical savings in money without problems in education” could be realized. A feasibility study by the architectural firm of Kaclik and Graves was initiated this past summer to survey Avonworth’s buildings and grounds. The results, expected within the next few months, will list options and alternatives to be considered.
