Ramsburg Jr. as a “wonderful man who was totally committed to the borough and the Sewickley Valley area.” Council President G. Whitney Snyder said, “He was a person who could deal with any problem in an objective fashion.” Rarnsburg died Saturday at his home after suffering from the effects of cancer. He was 82. He had served as mayor since 1966. Ramsburg was a civic leader in the Sewickley Valley area whose activities included serving as chairrrtan of the Iward of Sewickley Valley Hospital from 1977-88. In November, he was the secohd recipient of the annual Distinguished Service* Award presented by the hospital. Ai the time, SVH president Donald Spalding was quoted as saying, “He was one of those few individuals who loved his community and served to the greatest extent to make it a better place to live.” ■ For a complete obituary, see page B14. Snyder viewed Ramsburg as an “eternal optimist who was always in good humor,” Oliver said he was “extremely aware of the special character of this borough,” That comment made Snyder reminisce that both he and Ramsburg talked just last week about what they could do to preserve the community and its natural beauty. CALll THE SEWICKLEY HERALD WitH VOUR NEWS TIPS AT 741-8200 OR R Councii tabs new member By FRANK TieOHI staff writer Sewickley Borough’s starting lineup seems to be penciled-in for the time being. With a 6-2 vote,at its Monday night meeting, council added Jonathan Showe to its ranks. Showe, an Orchard Terrace resident, will fill the seat left vacant by Alfonso Scalercio, who died last month. Showe, nommated by Clinton Childs, received the majority vote, defeating Robert Karasek, who was nominated by C.B. Hays. “It was very interesting to elect an independent to a Republican seat,” Hays pointed out following the meeting. He and Frank Sacco were the only Karasek supporters. Childs defended his choice by saying that Showe has an excellent background, including many years on the planning commission, where he was a former president. He feels this experience provides Showe with the familiarity about how council operates. Showe, 46, is president and CEO of LeisurePro Inc., a snack-food manufacturer serving regional and national accounts in 24 states. The Grinnell College alumnus earned a master of arts in international studies from Johns Hopkins University. His wife, Elena Kornetchuk, owns International Images Ltd., a village art gallery. • In other news at the meeting, it was announced that a made- for-television movie will be filmed in the borough Aug. 4-6. “The Fire Next Time” will star Craig T. Nelson, of “Coach” and “All The Right Moves” fame. The movie takes place in a future where there are no cars, and gas is $60 a gallon. The majority of the shooting will take place at the corner of Beaver and Broad streets. I
