In fact, the entire student body of Quaker Valley High School gathered together early last Wednesday morning to hear the announcement firsthand: Quaker Valley School District had been named one of six finalists in the state’s Digital School District competition. The teens showed their colors and heard Dr. ---------------- Continual! on Pago 2 SIWICKliY SVH seeks donors to bolster local biood supply By Robert Weible Staff writer______________ Every year around this time, blood donations in the, area begin to decline — in part because of the busy holiday season and in part because of the inclement weather. But whatever the reason, the donation dearth can cause serious problems to local blood supplies. - The Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh has already declared a blood emergency with only two days’ supply on hand, less than 50 percent capacity. Last year, Sewicldey Valley Hospital and Heritage Valley Health System as a whole weathered the winter better than the Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh. Almost a year to the day, CBB issued an appeal for surgeons tof cancel Elective surgeries. Blood supplies were dangerously low for the more than 40 hospitals around the area supplied by the blood bank. This year, the blood bank at SVH is also low, especially of Type 0, but all types are needed. “During the winter months people just don’t come in,” said Lois Borowski, blood bank supervisor at HVHS, The hospital does get supplemental supplies from CBB but those supplies are not available now. During times like this, Borowski said, “we need to go to the community even more” During the slow season, she said, volunteers come into SVH a couple of days a week to call donors to help bolster local £' Conlinuod on Pago 5
