The Governor’s Center for Local Government Services will do a study to determine how the departments can create a regional police force, after Ben Avon and Glenfield leaders send letters of intent to the state organization, Leaders from Aleppo, Ben Avon Heights, Neville and Kilbuck already submitted the necessary paperwork. The six communities cover about eight square miles, A regional police study committee — including at least one member from each of the six communities — will help determine how to create one department, said Ron Stem, local government policy specialist for the Governor’s Center, Next, a police chief from an area polices department will investigate the region's law enforcement needs, talking to the district magistrate, riding along in patrol cars and gathering other pertinent information, The chief will submit a proposal and make a presentation to each municipality to outline each community’s policing needs. The process could take up to six months. "The study is really a building block, a foundation," Stern said. Municipalities will be under no obligation to merge police departments after the Study is complete.
