Ironically, tho meeting was held the nightbeforoonsQV student wa3 arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and trafficking in the junior high. (For that story, see page 5.) The topic was introduced by Kathy Van Dusen, whonoted thather junior-high- age son is now receiving help for his drug use. ■. “It is a half-truth,” she announced, “that drug use may be at a minimum in the schools, but drug trafficking is at a maximum.’’ Mrs. Van Dusen was referring to a comment made by QV Senior High Principal Jeanne Johnsop. She bolstered her statement with two petitions, one signed by residents and the other by junior- and senior-high students, asking for “stricter deterrents to drug use and trafficking." She suggested random locker searches'attdrandom drug testing of athletes. “Schools, parents, police, churches and community should move beyond the atti- tude of tolerance, which has been enabling our children to use drugs,” she said. “If we’re a community in denial, we need to wake up.” Mrs. Van Dusen was joined by other parents, who also had heard about the drugavailability atbothschoolsfrom their children. “Drugs are availableanywhere, anytime,” she noted. Board President Chester Fossae assured the parents of the board's support, saying that the district would do “whatever isneeessaryandlcgally responsible.” He cited the Supreme Court’s current deliberations on tho Fourth Amendment and cautioned, “Wemustwork within tholaw.” Continued on page 4.
