Dreeland____ ._____________ Editor _____ '______ ' ____________ They spoke in superlatives — about Quaker Valley being named one of the first Digital School Districts in Pennsylvania, about the technological future it could chart with the $2 million grant and a host of corporate partners, and about the tremendous possibilities for any place, any time education that a student here could experience With Gov. Tbm Ridge’s announcement via satellite last Thursday morning, QV had taken a giant leap for learning. Its new model school status (with Carlisle Area in Cumberland County and Spring Cove in Blair County) had set it apart as a teaching site, a place where the power of technology to improve education would be tested, a point where the “Digital Divide” would be bridged ------------;---------- Coaflawd on Page 5 MAKING THE announcement was Pa.’s Secretary of Education Eugene Hlckok. SIWICKUY Borough, state, review streets for hazards By Chris Wells Staff writer __________ Since scheduling a special dialogue Feb. 16 with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) following a fatal accident at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Ohio River Boulevard, Sewickley and PennDOT will cooperate to study three presumed hazardous borough " intersections. PennDOT intends to begin a six to eight week civil kfetebt, planning review, With no cost to Sewickley of intersections of Walnut, Chestnut and- Broad streets with Ohio River Blvd. affer residents petitioned council for a response to a pedestrian death at Chestnut Street in January. • After collecting roughly 700 ■ petition signatures, most of which had been rounded up at area businesses, an association of concerned citizens submitted its grievance to council. The entire review study will be fundedby the state at a cost of $5,000 — $7,000. Sewickley council members have affirmed their decisive backing of the study, to be fully funded by PennDOT.
