During Sewickley’s 2nd annual Flag Retirement Ceremony, held May 24, faded and tattered American flags were burned in Wolcott Park. Cuts were made by Bey Scouts from Ifcoop 243 and 164 on the flag that had flown at Edgeworth Elementary. Veterans, who served in WWH, Korea and Vietnam, prepared their flag, last flown over die Veterans Plot at Sewickley Cemetery, for respectful destruction. “Bom amid the first flames of America’s fight for freedom...,” read Malachy Whalen, former mayor of Sewickley, as the two flags were unfolded. David Valencia, former assistant pastor at Christ Church at Grove Farm in Ohio Township, turned himself in to authorities at Judge Richard McCarthy’s office in Millvale. Valencia, 47, of Tucson, Ariz., was held on eight charges — from child endangerment to rape — in incidents that took place from May-September 2001 involving a 17-year-old girl. Bond was set at $2,000 and a hearing date scheduled before Judge Donald Presutti in Bellevue on June 10. On May 12, a criminal complaint was filed by Allegheny County Detective Edward Adams detailing activities that had taken place during weekly counseling sessions at Valencia’s office at the church. While many of the sessions involved conversations about normal teen problems, according to the affidavit of probable cause, the appointments came to involve discussions about sex and then sexual contact. If the charges hold and he is found guilty, Valencia could spend 10-20 years in prison. Chief Norbert Micklos, of Ohio Tbwnship, received a call in'Iate April/early May from a family member about the incidents that occurred in spring of 2001. Micklos was uncertain why the victim waited so long to come forward.
