If council decides to adopt the proposed property tax increase discussed at Monday's regular council meeting, millage would increase by 1 mill to 6.8. With this rate, a homeowner with property assessed at $100,000 would pay $680 in real estate taxes next year; $100 more than this year. Carole Ford, council president, said, she was not satisfied with the increase and that council needed to look further into trimming expenses. Councilman Glenn Ford agreed. "We owe it to our citizens to look at our spending,” he said. Councilman Robert Hague said he is all for taking a closer look at the budget but noted trimming might not be easy considering that past councils have worked hard to keep the budget tight. "It's been a lean budget for a long time," he said. To make matters worse, he said, county assessments make maintaining the current millage especially difficult. "With the assessments being frozen (at the 2002 numbers), our revenues have flattened, but our costs are going up," Councilman Andrew Flowers said.
