Alicia Clem and Lauren Selleck, both of Sewickley, spend some time in Sewickley Public Library reviewing Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” REGION 741+ group contracts with planner By Chris Wells sense, conjures up the concept of a databank Staff writer___________________________________ In an action that bodes well for the advancement of multi-municipality economic readiness models, Sewickley Borough Council voted unanimously to retain an environmental planner to take the reigns in directing the study. The 741+ Discussion Group is banking on counsel from the group Environmental Planning and Design to lead the Sewickley Valley out from under the restrictive pressures created by dwindling population. In Sewickley, since 1960 there has been a 36 percent loss of what had been a steady community base of 6,157. Tbday there are 3,902 residents. Rather than serving as a joint study to merge the delivery of valley public municipal services, the visioning and economic study, in its broadest accessible to each participating municipality to make decisions as each sees fit. The databank is meant to serve all committed boroughs and non-governmental bodies for regional planning. Environmental Planning and Design, a 63-year old firm with headquarters in the city, was selected from among a pool of four entrants to shepherd the 11 localities within the Quaker Valley School District through potential economic austerity measures. So far, seven local governments — Bell Acres, Glenfield, Leet, Leetsdale, Osborne, Sewickley and Sewickley Heights — and Quaker Valley School Board have designated representatives to attend meetings of the steering committee. ----------------------- Continual! on Png* 3 OW THE HOAD , Post-holiday driving in fits and starts By Chris Wells_____________ Staff writer ______________ Since interstate travellers geared up over the Memorial Day weekend, they will have to downshift when driving the segment of Interstate 79 between the Neville Island Bridge and Exit 60, serving. Robinson Tbwnship, Yesterday an initiative with at least a $10 million repair price tag, aiming to smooth the ride along the state’s least travelled portion of 1-79, united the forces of two road contractors. PennDOT estimates that (he road work will last through October, shutting off one lane in both directions. While crews get ready during the first week of the project, two lanes of traffic will likely be preserved. “This is a concrete rehabilitation, concrete patching and total resurfacing of the road,” said PeniiDOT spokesman Dick Skrinjar. In an effort to upgrade the road’s concrete surface and buttress overpasses along the five-mile route, PennDOT has enlisted the services of Trumbull Corp. and Lindy Road Pavers for the project. Trumbull-Lindy often joins forces when attacking extensive contracting programs on state highways. Trumbull was the lead contractor on the Fort Pitt Bridge rehabilitation- procedure in 1999, and is dispatching the same crew of road engineers and project managers on this job.
