Study will determine health ratings for creek By Bobby Cherry STAFF WRITER Almost four years since remnants of Hurricane Ivan overflowed Big Sewickley Creek leaving thousands of dollars of destruction in its path, steps to understand the creek are under way. Officials with the state Fish and Boat Commission, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Bla-zosky Associates Inc. and Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association last week collected data WATERSHED in nine sites along the creek and its tributaries. The information will be researched and processed providing officials with health ratings for the waterways. It will be the first time in the creek’s history that such information has been documented according to Susan Barness, president of fhe watershed association. “People have had their own opinions as to what was causing (the damage),” she said. “Now, we’re going to find out what really is the problem.” With a nearly $60,000 grant through the state’s Growing Greener initiative, officials elec-troshocked the creek and two tributaries in the watershed in order to determine what fish species are living in the water. Officials documented 15 species living in Big Sewickley Creek in Leet, according to Craig Barras of Blazosky Associates. “Two other sites that were Continued on Page 3 Better docks installed at landing sites By Kristina Serafini STAFF WRITER Rising river water should be no match this year for the docks being installed at the Chestnut Street Boat Launch and Walnut Street Landing sites. SEWicR.LEY 1 The need for improved construction over last year's design was prompted by an incident in December, when the dock at Chestnut Street came loose and floated down river. Lynn Busatto, vice president of Industry Terminal and Salvage Co. in Beaver, who was hired by the borough to install the docks this year, said that unless there is an extreme flood situation, a similar incident is not likely, to happen again. "We've totally modified the original design,"extending the pilings by 14 feet,” he said. With the new design, the river would have to rise 22-feet before the docks could float off the pilings. The dock that floated away last year was never recovered. Busatto said they spotted it and tied it to a fleet in Monaca after the incident, but when they went back to retrieve it, it was gone. To ensure the docks remain in good shape and in place, they will be removed and stored at Industry Ter- CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 647397534406
