Photos by Tim Edmonson STREETSCAPE Retail sites planned for Village by fall By Chris Wells_______________________________ Staff writer_________________________________ Following behind a recent tide of business district shuffling along Beaver Street, the twin buildings once owned by Connelly Chiysler, Nos. 605 and 618, are undergoing significant restoration in advance of retail and office leasing. Also, a piece of the three-property enterprise is a sweeping exterior facade revamping and interior remodeling of the Wanshock Building at 608 Washington St. The glass-faced showroom of what had once been Sewickley’s only domestic automobile dealership may soon house Sewickley’s lone regionally themed franchise restaurant. SEWICKLEY Council moves to offer relief to residents By Chris Wells_____________ Staff writer_______________ In a bid to extend tax relief to home owners in Sewickley, borough council gave its resounding approval to a motion to advertise for amendments that would further establish the borough property tax ordinance. The existing ordinance in Sewickley’s code does not allow residents who are at least 60 years old to adjust their yearly income based upon rental properties they own. The amendment to the borough ordinance, while acknowledging the basic intent of tax relief under Allegheny County Act 77, attempts to further clarify the provisions that could affect long-time Sewickley residents. Conditions for eligibility include: •Age 60 or older, or if married either spouse age 60 •A widow or widower age 50 to 60 •Residents between ages 18 and 60 with a permanent disability •Residence within the county for at least 10 continuous years, or five years residence if the domicile was acquired with government or nonprofit housing assistance •Drawing a total yearly income of $30,000 or less In establishing income, only 50 percent of Social Security, SSI and railroad retirement benefits are to be included. Act 77, passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1993, was enacted as the county-wide Regional Asset District law that modified requirements for participation ________Continued on Pag. 5
