The Sunday before, she had mentioned to one of the church members that she felt a little awkward wearing a cap to church. DeFazio had been afraid that she would offend people, especially the pastor at the church, if she wore a hat after treatment for amyloidosis, a rare disease that claimed the life of Pittsburgh Mayor Richard Caliguiri. The Rev. Geoff Chapman told her no one would mind. “He told me the cap looked cute,” said DeFazio, 61, owner of Cheers gift shop on Beaver Street. She has taken time off work but still pops in the shop occasionally. Her husband, Tom DeFazio, a Sewickley councilman, ran into Linda Roemer, a church member, and told her his wife felt uncomfortable about wearing the cap in church.
