VIEW OF VICTORY New exhibit memorializes WWI Marines By Chris Wells_______________________________ Staff writer_________________________________ In an installment of rare and unusual artifacts from World War I, George Gaadt has taken his abiding penchant for military collectibles and woven it into an exhibit on American Marines at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland. The installed display, opened in early June and scheduled to continue until Sept. 24, memorializes Marine regiments defiant enough to acquire the alias, “Devil Dogs.” Gaadt is a photographic specialist and sports and historical artist with a studio in Sewickley. From 1917-1018 the 5th Regiment of an American Expeditionary force of Marines and an additional 6th Regiment flushed across northern France to stifle the German advance on Paris. In the early months of 1918 German troops had battered the French army, sending it slinking back toward its capital city in defeat. The American detachments were deterred all along their lines not to engage the surging enemy. Pershing, as Supreme General of U.S. Expeditionary Forces, first commanded the Marines as a viable fighting force on the eve of WWI. Prior to the standoff at Belleau Wood, United State Marine forces were often employed as limited contingents, such as during the Tripoli campaign in 1807 and in 1847 at Chupultapec in the Mexican War. But by June 6, 1918, the Marines faced Belleau Wood, a wooded glen filled with German machine gun batteries, and 20 days later in a cataclysmic repulsion, the woods were secured. “It was a very intense site of conflict and the —1------------------- Continued on tag# 5 SEWICKLEY Borough gets judge’s nod in Verizon case By Chris Wells___________ Staff writer_____________ Administrative Law Judge John Corbett ruled last week in favor of Sewickley claims that all of its phone exchanges belong in the Greater Pittsburgh White Pages. Also part of the initial decision, Corbett handed down a civil fine of $1,000, the upper limit allowed under state law. Judgement is subject to the ultimate regulation affecting phone service by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. “They've [Verizon] fought this hard throughout, “said Jeffrey Gitchel, a lawyer representing Sewickley in during the case. “Sewickley made it clear that there was harm being done and now that a judge has made a ruling, there is no reason to think that they won’t file an exception.” Three years ago Bell Atlantic-Pennsylvania, Inc., Which was eventually absorbed by Verizon, embarked on an effort to implement a standard that removed non-local secondary listings from the White Pages. As a result of rescoping by Verizon, residents and businesses not defined by Verizon as serving the local reference needs of primary users of its directories were removed from the White Pages. Deciding in favor of the arguments presented by attorneys for Sewickley Borough, and dismissing claims by Verizon that Sewiddey phone exchanges were not within the local calking area served by Greater Pittsburgh phone directories, Corbett ordered reinstatement ------- Continued on tag# 2
