O’Neil said the tree-trimming that occurred Was in response to a request by Leetsdale Borough because of serviceinferruptions. He said the work was discussed with borough officials. Apparently,limbshadgrownovertheelectrical wires and were causing power outages. In explaining Duquesne Light’s pruning methods, O’Neil said the company prunes for the tree's health and its methods are endorsed by International Society of Arboriculture. TheLcOtsdalesituationcaroetoisSuethismontii after Leetsdale Borough filed a formal complaint ' with Duquesne Light over the work done on trees an Broad Street. BIG WHEELS: This 1957 Jaguar XK14Q was part of theSewIckley Antique Car Show this past Saturday. It took HenryVerValen more than 20 years to restore this British gem from the ground up. it was definitely worth the wait. For more on the event, see page n. Helen Dworchak, chairwoman of the borough’s Shade tree commission, said the pruning was so severe that the utility company did not consider What the trees would look like after the primers were finished. “If the trees need to be pruned to stop the power outages, that’s fine,” Ms. Dworchak said. “I was not upset that they were cut. It’s the way they were cut.” . She said she was also not happy with the way trees were cut along Beaver Street earlier Oils year, saying they were “butchered,” hut that no one seemed to complain. Some Beaver and Maple streets residents complained of water backing up in their basements, The new Thrift Drug store on Beaver Street, between Sewickley Hotel and State Wine and Spirits store, could not escape thestorm either with water backing up into its basement and display floor. Sections of Ohio River Boule-. vard had to be intermittently closed in the afternoon due to high Water on the roadway making ft treacherous for area motorists. Flannery said Sewickley road crews were clearing road debris and tree branchesfrom the boulevard and borough streets until 7:30 p,m. “It was a good thing Sewickley’s catch basins were cleaned last month,” said Flannery. He said the flooding could have been a lot a worse if the drains lad not been fhsraitghfy Cleared. “With Sewickley having a eombinedsewer system,ftwould have needed 4-5 foot pipes to handle all the water,” said Flannery. 'He said home and business owners do not have to get wet in tevere downpours if they do the following two things: •Keepdownspoutsawayfrom sewer lines. , •TlieinstalMon of back-flow devices in basements will keep them dry.
