The ’pupils of ’tlie Somckley High School will give an entertainment in' the* School Auditorium* on Friday and Saturday evenings, February 13th and 14th. Two farces, “Pa’s New Housekeeper” and “Blighted Buds,’’ will be given and the casts ate being coached by Mr. Ben, Brown. For the, last ten days the players have been rehearsing hard arid with two weeks more in which to rehearse they ape all confident that the entertainment will be the. most successful given by, the local High School.* Between the farces two! athletic drills will be staged by the High School girls under the tutelage of Miss Starling. In “Pa’s New Housekeeper,’’ George Smith as Jack Brown has the title role, and Chas. ‘ Hunter plays the part of “Pa’’ Jackson, supported -by a- very good cast. James Clarke as “John Smith, the 'Drummer, ’’ has- the leading ’ part in “Blighted Buds,’’ but the title roles are taken by Miss Christine Brown and .Miss , Margaret Gibb. There is much sickness in this part of the valley, probably - due to changeable weather, alternating • from springliike mildness -tto> -wintryi'cold. On 'Dawson street there are, in three families, seven children afflicted with scarlet fever, diphtheria and grippe. The Martin public school, a mile up the run, has-been, closed, and will so remain for two weeks from last Monday, owing to the prevalence of illness among the children. Mr. H. Phillips is confined to bed by a combination of asthma and indigestion. Miss Amanda Pryor is at her home, suffering from grippe. Yet the weathe man, Penny wit’s declarations on* Tuesday, was that it would be “very cold1 Wednesday.’’ On that day it was 62 de-gres. Attendance ;ait the public school here has fallen oflj. • 5 5 5 5 Mr. Harry Siler, a popular young man, is to be married in the spring. He is employed as -a crane worker at Am-bridge. His chosen one is Miss Caroline' Heid, of Rochester, Pa. $ 9 9 9 • , A brand' new butcher shop will be opened by February 1. It will be conducted by Mr. G. W. Sebolt, who is having the east end of his building fitted up finely for the purpose. The Pittsburgh Metal Ceiling Co. is putting in the , time-proof and rust-proof metal, zinc, on * the ceiling of the new place. - 9 9 9 9 Three men are at work preparing for the coming, in April, of the new industry, to manufacture 'rugs, carpets and mats. Machinery ihas been set up in the large brick building formerly occupied by the Illinois Leather Co., of Chicago. ^ 9 9 9 9 Mr. Lawrence Yant, .-janitor of the public school, is a hale and hearty old-timer. He will be 72 next August, but doesn’t look it. And* he is the father of-17 sons and daughters. - 9 9 9 9 Mrs, Victor Jenning, wiho was former- ly Miss Gertrude Burket, of this place, “Spring fever’’ was the chief ailment here this week.1 It was so warm on Wednesday that the vernal illness broke out. But it was not a serious disorder. ' 9 9 9 9 . . About the swiftest curent in the Ohio river is at Haysville. This is caused by the dyke built long ago. It forces the water to this side of the stream,.and the river joins, at the dyke, the water divided by Neville island, .so that it unites with the main stream. ,On Wednesday afternoon ice began coming down, out of the Allegheny river. at Oakmont, where it was 15 feet thick’. It was in small pieces, and did no damage, but delayed upstream boats. One boat, with a tow of empties, tried-in vain to get past Haysville, Wednesday, and had to back down and' tie up. * * 5 J'S 5 ‘ Mr. E. P. Eckhard, after a" long siege of grippe was able to resume his duties as postmaster on Wednesday morning; Another victim of ‘this disorder is Mrs. Hay, mother of Mr. John" Hay. 9 -9' 9 9 The tall new derrick makes a skyscraper appearance' on the hillside, in Glen Osborne borough. The Scientific American says that she has procured a -patent, No. 1,048,-569, for a thumb and finger sucking preventor, in which there is a stall fitted on fhe, thumb or finger, . and a round disk, too large to be inserted in'., the mouth, is held by the stall on the end-of tlie’thumb or finger so that the latter cannot be put in the mouth, Wonder if. it can be used on. the big toe?
