PART TWO Sewickley Herald makes summertime news Compiled by Robert Weible_____________ Staff writer__________________________ The second half of the year began with big changes at the Sewickley Herald. Gateway Publications, parent company of the Herald, combined all north/westem-area papers into one office site in Robinson Tbwnship in June. Even more noticeable was the major format change of the paper. Along with the paper’s more compact size, “Star” was added to the title of the Herald and all 15 of the Gateway papers. (The renaming was to provide a solid company identity.) Despite the changes, our commitment to the communities we serve remains the same July ■ Quaker Valley residents celebrated the 4th of July at Leetsdale’s annual parade, carnival and fireworks celebration. ■ Allegheny- County Executive Jim Roddey hosted the regional summit at Pittsburgh international Airport. At issue was the proposed merger of. United Airlines and US Airways and its effect on the airport’s 11,700 area employees. ■ Leetsdale officials were frustrated by vandalism in Henle Park. Council Vice President Pete Poninsky offered an out-of-pocket reward for information leading to the prosecution of the perpetrators. ■ Sewickley officials got the cold-shoulder at a conference with Bell Atlantic. The two parties had been ordered by Administrative Law Judge John Corbett to negotiate a solution to toe ongoing phone book omission dispute. ■ A public input meeting was held for the Leetsdale overpass. In a 51 to 9 vote, residents chose Alternative II, which routes truck traffic away from Washington Street. The choice allowed for final design of the project. ■ Sewickley council considered a formal filming procedure in toe borough after a Herehey’s commercial had been filmed in toe business district in June. ■ Residents along Chadwick Street received some help from the borough when curbs and streets were painted to GATEWAY PUBLICATIONS, the Sewickley Herald’s parent company, initiated a format and name change in July to establish a solid company identity. Phofos by Tim Edmonson organize parking. ■ A $250,464 roof project began at Edgeworth Elementary to replace toe original layers and toe 1980s addition. . ■ Osborne Borough opened memorial donations to all Quaker Valley residents. Quaker Valley School District earned a SchoolMatch “What Parents Want" award for the ninth consecutive year. ■ Sewickley officials met with Waste Management representatives to iron out trash collection problems. ■ The premiere edition of the newly renamed Sewickley Herald Star debuted. ■ Although detours were expected to tie up traffic across the Sewickley Bridge, actual results were not as bad as anticipated.
