Many families in Edgeworth and the Sewickley area wish to honor the memory of Tony Yankello, the kind man who served as a crossing guard by the Edgeworth Elementary School for 13 years until his sudden death on Jan. 14. Their goal is to plant a tree in his honor near the corner of Meadow Lane and Chestnut Road, where Tony cheerfully greeted children and parents by name on every school day. Today is the day from 12:30 to 2 p.m. when residents can make the lives of the women of the shelter a bit more comfortable. Located in downtown Pittsburgh, Bethlehem Haven is a homeless shelter. The mission of the shelter is to assist homeless women to achieve their highest potential. Bethlehem Haven has been providing overnight emergency shelter to women for 20 years. St. James’ students will be collecting items such as paper towels and toilet paper; disinfectant and air freshener spray; Pledge spray polish; new pillowcases; drink mixes (iced tea, lemonade, etc.); “hotel” or sample size shampoo, conditioner, lotion and toothpaste; tooth brushes; deodorant; shower shoes; socks; spring/ summer sleep-wear (larger sizes are greatly appreciated); umbrellas; and videos. The shelter, however, cannot accept bedding or clothing. The students will be going through the neighborhoods in the early afternoon gathering up the personal care items. If you cannot be home at this time, leave the items on your porch or drop them off in the Gathering Space at St. James. In lieu of items, money will also be accepted as a donation to the women’s shelter. Any gift will be greatly appreciated. (tLfjj Kiin ; i I r,
