Preeland_____________________ Editor____________________, Before one book is opened or a single teacher met, hundreds of hours have been expended to make the Quaker Valley classrooms ready for learning. Beginning the first Monday after school ended in June, maintenance staffs at each of the district's four buildings began their work. Walls were scrubbed, and floors cleaned and rewaxed. Every piece of equipment was set up, tested and made ready to operate at the push of a button or the turn of a handle Lockers were repaired, and hallways were painted. And the work goes one With the start of school less than two weeks away, staffers are completing their jobs on the usual daylight schedule while special hours have been TAKING A shine to his work is arranged for night crews to lend a hand. REGION United Airlines announcement stirs caution _ By Eric Eisert________ Gateway Writer_________ While local officials were encouraged by last month’s announcement by United . Airlines concerning the proposed maintenance facility at Pittsburgh International Airport, many have expressed caution in the optimism. Last month, United Chairman James Goodwin announced the airline’s plans to move forward on the new maintenance facility . at Pittsburgh International if a proposed merger with US Airways goes through. The announcement has eased some worries that if United acquires US Airways it could cost many local people their jobs through either layoffs or relocation. Almost 11,700 US Airways employees live in the region. The new maintenance facility is expected to preserve almost 5,000 jobs. Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey said the announcement has helped alleviate some of the anxieties of jobs, but he is still waiting for word on the pilot training facility and other areas, before he could endorse the merger. “There’s still a good 1,200 jobs we haven’t heard about yet," Roddey said. He continued to say he hopes to get word from United within the next few weeks on the status of the training facility.
