Sewickley, and later Ambridge, played host at premier stops on the Mobile Workshop for 90 members of the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions from all across the nation. They all had come to Pittsburgh with nearly 800 others to take part in Pittsburgh Forum 2000, an event co-sponsored by Pittsburgh History & Landmarks and Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commissions. On their minds was preservation and the need to take bade practical solutions for the keeping of landmarks in their own communities. As a result, borough officials took no action on the petition at the Sewickley COW meeting. The petition has three major problems, said Borough Manager Kevin Flannery: The front of one property on the comer faces Beaver Street - and has a Beaver Street address; sec-onclly, the street is hot solely SewicMey’s. ft is jointly owned by Edgeworthj and lastly, but nmst importantly, council placed a one-year moratorium on resident-wily parking issues in thespring to study phHting issues throughout the borough. Even if everything about the petition could be accepted without concern, the petition foil below the required 70 percent of residents’ signatures requiredfor the designation. One the Academy Avenue residents who didnot sign the petition was Sewickley Mayor Malachy Whalen. “I’m philosophically opposed to resident-only parking,” Whalen said, “The real parking problem is on the other side of the street. “It’s a terrible inconvenience to have resident-only parking,” he said. “I definitely do not want it in front of my house.” Councilman C.B.
