Ed Rendell announced the investment of $101,000 to help Quaker Valley School District better prepare pre-kindergarten students for a lifetime of learning. Rendell visited Edgeworth Elementary School on Monday morning and was welcomed by school and area community officials. He said the money, released through the state’s historic Early Childhood Capital Investment Fund, will help the district expand and renovate Edgeworth Elementary School, which will house the district’s early childhood education program. “Pennsylvania is making unprecendented investments in early childhood education,” Rendell said. “The fund is helping school districts meet their facility needs, so they can expand quality early childhood education programs. “Studies have shown that investments in early childhood education pay long-term dividends, not only for our students but for the entire commonwealth,” -------------------------- Continued on Pago 3 I11TSP1I1 ' Fire company awarded grant for new truck Kristina Kregiei___________ Staff writer Leetsdale was one of the 49 fire companies in southwestern Pennsylvania that was awarded funding from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness and the United States Fire Administration’s Assistance to Firefighter Grant program. Last month, Congresswoman Melissa Hart presented the Leetsdale Fire Department with the $230,850 check, which will be used for a new fire vehicle. To date, thousands of fire departments across the country have received assistance from the program, totaling more than $2 billion. “Our Pennsylvania firefighters risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of millions of people,” Sen. Arlen Specter said in a statement on his Web site. “This grant will help assure their protection as they safeguard our communities, I commend the Department of Homeland Security for recognizing this priority and for its continued support of the nation’s fire services.” The Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant Program has three grant opportunities each year to which fire departments can apply. The program also offers a SAFER grant program, which provides funding to hire firefighters and incentives for volunteer recruitment and retention, as well as a Fire Prevention and Safety grant program. \ l A v-1 J. 5,U,tJL
