In an attempt to help raise awareness for organ donation, the First Family Pledge Millennium Mayorthon came through Quaker Valley last week. But things didn’t go as smoothly as hoped. After a hand-off in Aliquippa, the ceremonial baton wound its way to Leetsdale, where Mayor Mike Maruca awaited its arrival. When the truck arrived the walk was canceled in an attempt to get back on schedule. REGION Bell Acres OKs request for wireless By David McElhinny Staff writer , _________ Bell Acres Borough has approved a motion that could springboard the area into the future. - This new project is a high speed, wireless, digital radio communication network (hat will allow residents to get online without tapping into: a phoneline “This is really a no lose situation for the borough,’ explained John Dohanich, borough solicitor. “This system will allow wireless communication service to the entire community at no cost to the borough,” Metricom has a patented technology called “Ricochet,” a new concept in radio communication. Tbmake the system work, the company will come the area and install devices called pole-top radios on top ^SSS^telOphOiie poles and liijit ^standards throughout Bell Acres and other surrounding communities Which approve the system. “Whoever owns the poles will receive a fee for the use,” said Greg Reynolds, Metricom’s manager for the Pittsburgh area. “The pole top radios replace the heed for telephone wires and will actually allow people to get on-line faster.” The pole-top radios, ten-pound boxes that are 4 x 7 x 10 feet, are the key ingredient behind the company’s “Ricochet technology,” “Those boxes represent about 15 years of research,” says Reynolds. “When ------Continued on pago 2 Call the Sewickley Herald Star with your news tips at 412-494-9017 or e-mail hews to sherald@ghplus.infi.net.
