At its meeting last week, Sewickley Heights Council decided to start monitoring its police cars. The cost of operating police cars has been a concern for council for several months. Of special concern is how fast the cruisers go through their tires. “I don't know about the tires,” said council President G. Whitney Snyder at the meeting.’“We buy the best, but they (police cars) chew up tires like they’re going out of style.” In conjunction with Mayor Furman South III, Snyder has developed a plan to monitor the police vehicles. It includes registering the miles each cruiser travels per turn, analyzing where it travels during that turn and the duration per turn the police car is idling. Continued on page A3 ▼ COURrRESUW Gateway decision A federal court judge has ruled that Gateway Publications reporters are not entitled to overtime pay if they work for any of the company’s newspapers with a circulation fewer than 4,000 copies. Judge William Standish of U.S. District Court ruled in a suit filed against Gateway by the federal Department' of Labor that the federal wage and hour law’s exemption of small newspapers applied to those published by Gateway. This is the first time a court has found the exemption applicable to commonly published newspapers.
