THE LCAA S parade float last year was one small step for Leetsdale. It was made by Robyn and David Graham, owners of Abtrex industries. The Grahams even donated the trailer so the LCAA could have a parade float each year. 4th of July celebration starts tomorrow Pago 13. QV Wrapup B The final days of classes were full of special activities at each of the Quaker Valley schools. For stories on the students, see ° ’ Pago 19 The Leetsdale Fourth of July celebration is set to kick off tomorrow. One of the highlights of the celebration, the parade, will take place on Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m. New this year is the' Memorial Service, which in the past took place during the parade, has been moved to before the 4 parade begins. The service will be at 1:30 p.m. at the monument on Beaver. The parade will then begin. Following is a line-up of Lestsdale’s Fourth of July parade participants: Leetsdale Police Department; Jim Charlton, Parade Marshall (Convertible by Tom Weber); Leetsdale VFW Post 3372 Colorguard, led by Commander Jim Charlton; local police departments, including Aleppo, Bell Acres, Edgeworth, Leet, Sewickley and Sewickley Heights; Blue Knights Police Motorcycle Club; Quaker Valley Ambulance Authority; and Mel Etters, commander of Coraopolis VFW Post 402. Leading colorguards from: Sewickley VFW Post 5756, Coraopolis VFW Post 402, Ambridge VFW Post 165, Sewickley American Legion (A.L.) Post 4, Sewickley A.L. Post 450, Moon Township A.L. Post 924, U.S. Submarine Veterans, Ohio Valley Marine Corps, Leetsdale VFW float Post 3372 (driven by Art Holman); Leetsdale VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 3372 (Cars courtesy of Marc Connelly); 10-foot replica U.S.S. Nautilus SSN 571 (1st nuclear submarine); and 911th Air Command Unit Hummer. Continued on Pago 3 Fire fighters on duty work thru detours I; Mark H*rfM __________fief? wvfrtf_______ The time is 3:18 a.m. The fire alarm is screaming. Smoke tumbles out of windows while a family waits on the lawn for the Cochran Hose Company to arrive. The throaty horn at the borough building is belching monotonously, and sirens are heard, echoing off of the hillside. But those sirens never get closer and a tinderbox of wonderful memories are traded in minutes for one giant monstrosity of char and ash. It could have happened if Quaker Valley’s fire chiefs didn’t plan for the worst amidst the myriad of road projects going on in the Quaker Valley. Jed von Hofen, Cochran Hose Company’s chief, said it’s hard to put an hour value on how much planning is going into redirecting several fire departments, but it’s a lot. Meeting with other local fire chiefs, Tim Scott of Edgeworth, Ernest Logan of Leetsdale and Rob Bennett of Emsworth, von Hofen was able to coordinate safety routes in case of the worst. Not only that, but Cochran Hose Company met with Kevin Flannery, Sewickley Borough manager, repeatedly to discuss routes and possibilities. “To their credit,” said Flannery, “they have been able to design strategies to alleviate any situation with those road closings.” “Until we had an actual date for the closings,” said von Hofen, ‘we just confirmed that we could get around.” That meant creating an awareness among more than 30 firefighters in Cochran Hose Company alone of the condition of the roads and alternate routes. “I need to be able to get my firefighters to this building to get on the apparatus to get on the scene,” said von Hofen. —— Continued on next page
