Flora, Pippy contend for senate seat By Tim McNellie Herald contributor Gianni Floro was planning on running for Stat:e Senate, just not this soon, Wlien Democrat Ernest Simon droppeci out of the race for the 37th district in August, citing personal reasons, Allegheny County Democratic Party turned to Floro, a trial attorney with a Downtown lawfirm who had his eyes on the 2008 race. "This is four years early, but the opportunity presented itself,” he said last week. The Leet Tbwnship resident isn’t completely new to politics, having served the past three years on the Qualcer Valley School Board, but he faces a daunting challenge in iiis first foray into the state arena. For the past 10 years his opponent, John Pippy, has been a fixture in the Western suburbs where was elected to tour terms in the 44th State House District and last year won the race to replace Tim Murphy in the State Senate, Pippy is a veteran of state politics and has become popular with local voters, He won has last few House seats unopposed, and during last year’s state senate campaign Pippy beat challenger Paul Gitnik by a 20-pohit margiti even though he was unable to campaign because he was in Iraq with his Army jReserve unit — —- Continuad on Pag* 3 SEWICKliT Bus incident ruled accident in final report By Rachel Weaver________________ Staff writer ___________________ Sewickley police ruled a Quaker Valley School District bus-pedestrian incident resulting in a four-year-old boy sustaining serious injuries an accident last week. The accident occurred Oct. 7, at the comer of Bank and Ferry streets at 11:50 a.m. as the school bus was making a turn onto Ferry Street. ' No one was an eyewitness to what happened, although everyone at the scene was questioned, said Chief John Mook of the Sewickley Police Department. The boy himself said he was struck and was rushed to Children’s Hospital. “We’ve talked to everyone but the boy,” Mook said. Police may speak to the child at a later date to see what he can remember. “Even if we find out exactly what happened, it would still be an accident,” Mook said, “I’m glad he’s going to be all right. His injuries are all reversible,” The bus driver, who has been a QV transportation employee for 8 years and a school bus ciriver for 13, was not penalized for the accident. Dr, Joseph Clapper, district assistant superintendent, said there was no evidence of negligence or carelessness, and police said he had taken all normal safety precautions and violated no regulations or laws. Because the driver was very distraught when he found out what happened, he was given the option of faking time off but he chose to continue working, “He has an excellent safe-driv-------------Contin««d on Poga 2
