Photo by Tim Edmonson New Quarters Down payment made on properly By Chris Wells_______________________________ Staff writer__________________________ After two years of scouting out prospective sites suitable for a replacement to its old multipurpose borough building, Leetsdale council made the first step toward securing property for its new generation borough center. On a 5-0 vote, council resolved a motion to tender a $1,000 down payment on the lot at 136 Broad St., which it executed Aug. 13. The down payment preserves the purchase agreement on the property until Aug. 27 during which time the borough engineer, KLH Inc. of Robinson, will survey the land for viability. Leetsdale agreed in principle to purchase the property for $120,000. Following probing by the engineers, bids can be advertised for architects to lay out floor plans and access points to the proposed bi-level administration center, “We are going to facilitate the borough getting an architect to survey to property’Snd ----------—----------- Continued on Pago 2 ADHERE LEETSDALE Borough officials may mak&fneir move, u REGION Governments consider COG trash option By Chris Wells __________ Staff writer_____________ Like the proverb alleges, cleanliness being next to godliness, municipalities that fall inside the purview of the Quaker Valley Council of Governments have been presented with the lure of increased effectiveness through unified garbage disposal. Bids to collection companies reportedly are to be dispersed before the end of August by Quaker Valley COG. Before that can happen each of the local governments that are banded together as elements of the COG must sign off on the proposed garbage collection plan at the August COG session. “During August at the latest, this contract will be finalized,” said John Jakielo, Quaker Valley Council of Governments director. “Every borough wanted to get together and see about a joint contract.” The boroughs currently considering fee COG-organized collection contract are: Aleppo, Avalon, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Glen-field, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet Tbwnship, Leetsdale, Osborne, and Sewickley. Borough managers expect their contributions to be reduced as more municipalities sign on and vote for membership in the waste agreement. Factors like the size of then-yards and the distance between home addresses determine (he overall costs eventually paid by residents. In some municipalities the trash company will directly bill its customers whereas, in other cases, the
