Mayor William H. Colbert died of an apparent heart attack. He Was 74. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Richard D. Cole Funeral Home, Sewickley. However, as the 'Herald went to press Monday night, final arrangements had not been made for visiting hours or services. The Cole Funeral Home may be reached at 741-4334 for updates on arrangements, Duane Puckett, Sewickley Valley Hospital nursing supervisor, confirmed that Colbert had been brought to the hospital in cardiac arrest. He said he did not know whether the mayor died en route to the hospital or in the hospital. A source told the Herald that Colbert was stricken by a massive heart attack in his private office on the second floor of his home on Cochran Street around 7 ,p.m. It is believed that he died there. "There is a hole that will not be easily filled,” said Sewickley Council President Laurence O’Loughlin in response to Colbert’s death. “He was a good mayor and was good for the town. He was a friend of mine. I will miss him.” Politically, Colbert was in the final year of his first term as Sewickley mayor, having defeated Mayor Marie Guy, a Democrat. In an interview with the Herald last year, Colbert, a Republican, had waivered as to whether he would run again for mayor. Nevertheless, he finally announced his candidacy for re-election this past December. As for the immediate changing of the guard in Sewickley,0’Loughlin said that according to borough code as he understands it, he is now acting mayor and Councilman Clinton Childs will move up to council president. O’Loughlin said he expects council will nominate individuals to fill Colbert’s seat. They have 30 days to do so. He noted that if there were an impasse on the final selection, he would then cast the deciding vote. O’Loughlin said he would then revert back to his council-president’s seat and Childs to vice president. O’Loughlin emphasized, though, that this Was his interpretation and that he would confer with Solicitor Chuck Means'* on Tuesday. Colbert was a native of Butler, Pa,, and attended Shady Side Academy. He Was a graduate of Haverford College and also a law-school graduate. During World War II, Colbert served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. One of his last public appearances was at the annual veterans’ Memorial Day observance in Sewickley Cemetery, At one time, he was a sitting judge on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. He also was a former Osborne Borough solicitor. Among his many duties, Colbert was known for delivering his light humor annually as the master of ceremonies at the Sewickley Herald Honors Dinner. He and his wife, Betty, were Citizens of the Year. Colbert was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, and was an avid model-railroad enthusiast. In addition to his wife, the former Betty Crawford, Colbert is survived by two sons, Britton, who lives in California, and William, who resides in Bogata, Colombia. A complete obituary will appear in next week’s Herald. Herald Editor Emeritus B.G, Shields also Contributed to this report.
