The Sewickley Valley’s Home News Weekly Vol. 41 No. 21 SEWICKLEY, PA., THURSDAY, MAY 25, 1944 Price Five Cents Hast Pear’* 3ttemorial “Exercises at ^>fye Tfonor 3\oll PJioto by Thomas Toia MEMORIAL DAY Sewickley’s Sixty-fourth Celebration Next Tuesday Sewickley’s traditional celebration of Memorial Day, with a parade of invited uniformed organizations and a program of appropriate ceremonies, will toe held for tlio Gitli year next Tuesday. The parado mil start at the post office at 2:30 in the afternoon, moving .up Broad Street, and will finally dismiss at tlie Community Circle where stands the Valley’s Honor Roll, 'and where the exercises, which formerly took place in the Cemetery, will be held this year as they were in 1043. The parade, expected to be one of the Ibiggest over held in the Valley, will bo featured by the. Beaver Falls High School Band, national champions,- which will give the usual concert sponsored by Post 4, American Legion, in the evening, 7:1.5 to 8:80 o’clock, In the parade will be seven jeeps, driven by ■inonrbers of Company A, 707th. Military Police Battalion; the crew of an LSI' ship mil also march, along with many other organizations and bands. The parade will march up Broad Street to Thorn, to Little, to Beaver, to Peebles Street, stopping at the United Presbyterian Church for the traditional exercises at the .monument in front of the church; then to Thorn (Street, to Broad, and to the Community Circle.- Parking of automobiles along the streets to bo traversed by the parade will.be prohibited from two o’clock until the parade lias passed, police announce. 'Any service men or women home on. furlough are cordially invited to march in the parade. After the ceremonies at the. Honor Roll, Retreat .will be held in front of the Sewickley public school, anil, the visiting orgaitixations will be served supper in the school by ladies of the various Auxiliary organizations. The band concert will follow at 7:15, closing at S£30 because of transportation discultios. William A. McElravy will be Commander of the Bay, Lt,-Col. Robert AV. MeKnight, Chief Marshal and Master of Ceremonies at the exercises. Valley Ca.mp No. 127, United Spanish War Veterans, is sponsor of the celebration, assisted by the Allegheny County Mounted Police Troop, Detachments of the U. S. Arany, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marino Corps, the WAICS, AVAVES and SPARS; Pennsylvania Reserve Defense. Corps, Canadian Legion, French Veterans of AVorld AAr.ar I, Post 4, Post 450 «nd other Posts of the 32nd District, American Legion; United Spanish AVnr Veterans of Allegheny County, Vcteians Association of Allegheny County, The AVashington Infantry, iSewickley Chapter, American Bod Cross; Memorial Wold Crass Corps; Veterans Association of the 107th Artillery; Davis Star Camp, Sons of Union ATeterans; and Boy and Girl Scouts and AVolf Cubs. The ceremonies will include as usual the salute to those who have answered the last muster during the past year. There are no surviving members of the Grand Army; veterans of the Spanish AVar were William A. Dolan, Charles J. Britt, and Prank D. Numan. Veterans of the First AVorld AVar, John C. Anderson, John O. Burgwin, Alex. M&Mnrdo, John Mark Rogers and Carl C. Smith. Men of the Second AVorld. AVar were Donald T. Campbell, Thomas J. Dncey, Wii-liam AV. Frick II, George Marshall Hamilton, George Francis Hite, Edward R. King, Richard Os/burn Lottes, Max J. M'aust, Joseph Frederic Meyer, and James L. AVhite. Not included in the Salute, of course, os their return is hopefully if anxiously awaited, are the following: Reported wonnded, since the war began, are William J. Barr, Kenneth L. Canonge, G. 'Stewart Hinldey, Samuel S. Meta, Samuel H. P. Stinson, and Vincent AVholey. Reported ‘'missing in action,” DeVere J. Johns, Horace Holt, and Charles J. ATost. Prisoners of war: In Germany, Leonard Bughmnn; in Japan, James L. Leggett, Jr., and Ralph Spinelli, The Memorial Day Committee suggests that the programs be retained and mailed to someone in the armed forces. J
