Zahner, Jr., lias completed the AAF prescribed radio course at Truax Field,: Wisconsin, including- a specialized training in control network systems, and a pre-radar course. He Was given additional radar training at Chanuto Field, ULinois, where lie received special mention for higih, marks. He is now at Boca Eaton, Florida, where his radar training will lie completed. FT ~ Charles J. Yost • ¡Technical Sergeant Charles Yost of Sewickley Heights, radio operator and gunner on a B-24, has now completed 18 missions over enemy territory. Stationed with Jimmy Stewart’s squadron in England, he has received his Air Medal and two oak-leai clusters, also a special 'citation iby tlie President. He reports the Jerries are plenty hot to handle and really mean business. While on a seven-day furlough he met “Sunny” 'Quig, also of Sewickley. After completion of twelve more missions he liopes fco come home on a furlough. Joseph R. McMaster Joseph Eoibfb McMaster, Jr., son of Mr.. and Mrs. J. B. McMaster of 522 Blaeliiburn Avenue, Sewickley, was last week appointed a second lieutenant of the Army of the United States, Air Coups, and awarded his silver wings and the rating of pilot at the colorful graduation exercises of the AAF Training Command Single Engine Pilot School, Spence Field, Georgia. L J\JU\ WITH THE COLORS Receives Silver Star The daily papers tliis week carried a picture of Lieutenant Jay H. Winegard-nes, son of Mrs. Marie B. Winegardner, 615 Locust Place, receiving his Silver Star for gallantry in action in Italy from Major General Geoffrey Keyes. A first lieutenant in the (field artillery, ho was in tlie front lines aa an artillery observer and for several days lieldi offi Nazi counter-attacks from the infantry Ms "unit was supporting; ono attack was broken just 75 yards «way* Lieutenant Winegardner was attending Washington & Jefferson College when lio enlisted in the Field Artillery in January*, 1042. A'ftor training in several camps and instructing at Fort Smith, Arlt., wlioro lie married Eliza-betli Ann Roberts, ho was sent overseas last iSeptenibor and has tboen in the thick otf the fighting in Italy. Promoted To Corporal Pfc. William J, O’iNeil, son of Mts. Alicö O’Noil, 219 Ivilibuck Street, Gloh* field, lias ibeen promoted tö eorporal .at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Stono of Hill Street, is in tlio Naval Aviation Coups, Entering the service in October, 1042, he has roeeivod training at the University of Ponnsylivania, at Chapel Hill, N. C., and •at Purdue University, Ho is noiw at tlio Naval Air Station, Bunker Hill, Indiana. Charles E. Stone Start Sergeant Charles E. Stone is seen at an Eighth AAF Bomber Station, in England, one of a crew who operate tho training unit at that station, one oif the most complete' outfits of its typo iti the United Kingdom. Sergeant Stone is a bonibsight and antomn,tic-pilot MWuntenaneo and repair specialist in this- ofllclent crew in <*ltarge of (building and maintaining the training devices used there. He is a. son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Stone, 521 Hill Street, Seivicldey, attended Sewickley High School, and was employed as a shift ¿foreman in the. tool and cutter department of Pittsburgh I‘ oi'gmgs Co., Cora'opolis. He has been m England for more than nine months. Second Lieutenant Frederick J. Menz Graduated na a bomber pilot and commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Frederick J. Menz, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Menz of 544 Centennial Avenue, was one of 5S3 youths from tho East receiving their commissions in Texas and Oklahoma on April 15tlu Lt. Menz graduated from the. Army Air Field at Pampa, Texas, where lio had taken his advanced training. Enlisting in tho Army Air Forces in September ’42 while still a student at St. Vincent’s College, Lutrobe, lio was called to service in February, 1743 and sent to Miami, Florida. Completing his basic there, lie1 attended Ohio State University and was classified as a pilot in July, 1043. That fall, ho attended pre-flight school in San Antonio, Texas, and trained) also at In* dependence, Kansas, transferring to Pampa, Texas, in February, 1944 for tlie advanced training,
