Photo by Davidson Chan Bacterial meningitis scare eases Two QV students are carriers, but no one has disease bacteria, was made available to all students at the junior high school. “The infection can be very serious, but if treated early people will recover,” Cole said. “It is not unusual to find sporadic cases of meningitis, but clusters are unusual and that is why we investigated,” he explained. The big blizzard on the previous weekend, which caused problems for everyone, actually aided school officials in alerting parents of the situation, said Dr. George Appel, Quaker Valley School District assistant superintendent. Quaker Valley officials received word Friday, before the storm, that a 14-year-old boy from the junior high had contracted meningococcal meningitis, commonly known as bacterial meningitis, and a second student displayed symptoms consistent with the infection. Appel reported that teachers and the nursing staff came to school at 10 a.m. on Saturday, despite warnings of the upcoming blizzard, and began calling parents to advise them of the situation. Continued on page A2 Results from Allegheny County Health Department’s bacterial-meningitis nasal-culture tests show Quaker Valley Junior High School’s carrier rate is less than the standard. Of the 21 tested, two' Students, 9.5 percent, tested positive as carriers, the health department reported on Monday. “These students are carriers,” said Guillermo Cole, health-department spokesperson. “They do not have the disease, and the percentage rate is lower than that of the general public.” Last week, Quaker Valley School District reported that three students, a 14-year-old boy, and a 12- and 13-year-old girl, had contracted the highly contagious disease. “It is normal to find 10 to 25 percent of the public harrying the strain and never showing symptoms,” Cole said. “Close contacts (family and friends) of the patients are taking preventative medication, Rifampin, an antibiotic used to destroy the 50 Cents for police By mm TIS0MI Staff writer. The police force in Sewickley Heights will now have a piece of equipment —- a potential life saver — like that in neighboring communities. At its meeting last week, council unanimously approved an expenditure-of $3,600 to purchase eight bullet-proof vests, or body armor, at $450 each for the borough’s policemen. First, however, council wants Police Chief A.E. Farrier to document the time and circumstances under which the officers will be using the vests. Mayor Furman South will have final Say. That decision followed on the heels of a number of questions and concerns addressed by council. “1 don’t want them to sit in the closet,” said Councilman Fitzhugh Brown. “Are they going to be carried with them at all times?” Councilman Stephen Nash agreed: “I feel strongly we should hot buy them unless they are are going to be worn.” Councilman David Genter wondered what would happen if an officer got hurt and were not wearing a vest. Council President G. Whitney Snyder said he was told it might be unreasonable to expect the officers to wear them at all times. Councilwoman Georgia Mosier said she had spoken previously to Farrier and he feels his officers really need this piece of equipment. “I would like to see the vests at least be made available to the officers,” she said. Council had suggested the idea of only purchasing one, but later learned the vests need to be form-fitted to each officer’s body frame.
