Wednesday, April 7, 1971 Fifteen Cents Presbyterian Church To Host Community Good Friday Service The Christian Community of the ;ewickley Valley will have a varied chedule of services in which to par-icipate in one of the most meaningful :hristian events. ( Many of the community churches have lanned special and Holy Communion srvices for Maundy Thursday, April 8. everal special programs have been lanned for Holy Week. See the Church alendar listings for specific times. Viaundy Thursday One of the Maundy Thursday services ill be observed at the Sewickley United lethodist Church at 8:00 p.m., April 8. The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and enebrae will be observed. Tenebrae 'mbolizes the apparent victory of the powers of darkness oyer Jesus, The Christ, but their actual failure to put out His light. The service begins with a single candle representing Christ. From the main candle, a candle is lit for each disciple. At the end of the service, the other candles are extinguished and the Christ candle is hidden. With the lights out, the Christ candle is restored as the only light in the church. Good Friday Services The Community Good Friday Services, April 9, will be held at The Presbyterian Church from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Participating in the service will be the Rev. E. Zion Church and the Rev. J. Tolliver, Triumph Baptist Church. * ITie Presbyterian Church Choir, under the direction of Joseph Willcox Jenkins, will also participate. From Noon to 1:30 p.m., the choir and soloists of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will present special music to intensify the remembrance of Christ’s Death. The service will also contain the ancient service of darkness, Tenebrae, and a brief meditation. This service will precede the community service beginning at 1:30 p.m., thus providing a three-hour service, for those who find this an important part of their Easter devotions. Music includes "The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross” by Heinrich Schutz (168,5-1672), “Behold, He Bore Our . Infirmities” by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707), excerpts from “Christ on the Mount of Olives” by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), and “He Was Despised” from Messiah. Although the music was written many years ago, it still has great communicative powers for this sacred day, having an unbelievably “romantic” melodic quality and sensitivity. Principal soloists are John Myers, tenor; John Rathbun, baritone; Ann Ranson, soprano; Polly Odom, contralto; Gladys Lefebvre, niezzo, with incidental solos by Zonia Andreyev and Shirley Fulton, sopranos, and Jeff Holland, bass. Lee Kohlenberg, Jr., is organist-choirmaster; The Rev, Canon Benedict Williams, Rector. Sunrise Service Foi' the early riser on Easter Sunday, there will be a Community Easter Sunrise Service at 6:30 a.m. at the D.T. Watson Home. The music for this worship hour will be provided by the choirs of the Concord and Leetsdale United Presbyterian Churches. Rev. Philip Hastings, pastor of the Shields and Leetsdale congregations, will be the speaker of the hour. A light breakfast will be served following the service, Easter Concert “He Lives',” is the Good News of Easier. The Presbyterian Church of Sowickley will present a Festival concert of Easter Day on Sunday, April 11, at 5:00 p.m. The Church Choir under the direction of Joseph Willcox Jenkins, assisted by members of the Duquesne University Symphony and James Uebelhart. Jr., a student at Beaver High School, will present a varied program of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Lotti, and Randall Thompson. Highlighting the program wiH be a multi-language presentation of the evfi-lution of a Chorale Tune “(’hrist Lag in Totesbandeu,” from Thomas Acquinas to Johann Sebastian Bach and the Cantata No. 4 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Featured soloists in the program will be Mrs. Joyce Uebelhart, Marylin Werner, James Uebelhart, Sr., Dean Shuster and V^^allace Smith. A tea in the Robinson Room of the Church will follow the Festival. The public is cordially invited to attend. I
