Towns show off improvements By Any Hershberger ________________and Chuck Curtl_____________ Allegheny County Commissioners made their annual summer rounds last week, visiting Glenfield Borough’s newly constructed Community Center building and two sites in Leetsdale Borough. The tour represented municipalities of Allegheny County that participate in Quaker Valley Council of Government. Glenfield Borough received $30,000 in CD funds to construct a community center at Riverside Park. “One of the biggest projects Glenfield has seen in 15 years,” says Lisa Simpson, council president. “It is scheduled to be finished in late August.” The building will house a concession stand and, within the year, be the site for Glenfield Borough council meetings. Plans are in early stages for a possible youth recreation center at the building as well. A T-ball field also was added to the park with CD funds and has been in use since April. Play equipment will be put in by early fall. If 1998’s proposal is accepted by Allegheny County, a soccer field could be the next item to be built with grant money. While in Leetsdale, the commissioners made two stops. One was at Leetsdale Industrial Park to inspect the rehabilitation of the site. “I explained to the commissioners that they would be seeing their money spent in two ways,” said Mike Zipparo, council president. “One is state county and local government working together for the good of the county; the other is county and local govern- , ment working on a project that directly benefits Leetsdale.” , The commissioners’ main area of concern at the park was the First Street paving project, which received $182,000 in county backing. “The commissioners, I felt, responded favorably to the grant and the park,” said Steve Thomas, head of Leetsdale Industrial Corp. After that, the commissioners made a brief stop in Henle Park where they were greeted by Officer Jeff Besong and some of the students from the local DARE program. The commissioners also got an update on the handicap accessible restroom project that received a $23,000 county grant. Zipparo said the commissioners indicated they may stop back once both the First Street and restroom projects are under way or near completion. “Overall, it was a good visit. We were pleased,” said Zipparo. ▼ RENOVATION Library to expand Sewickley Public Library is expanding. Library trustees have purchased the adjacent property at 516 Thorn St. for the proposed expansion. Dr. David Hennessey, president of the library’s board of trustees, says the library has been studying its space needs for the past two years. “We simply have outgrown our building and desperately need more space for the current collection and for the level of activity in the library,” he says. “Lack of sufficient shelf space in the stacks has forced us to move more and more of the collection into the central reading room, which is already crowded with computer work stations and the tables for reading and studying. “We have no quiet spaces anymore and very little room left for the variety of programs sponsored by the library for children, students and adults." As part of the study, the library’s trustees engaged the services of Anders Dahlgren of Library Planning Associates in Madison, Wise. Dahlgren is considered to be one of the finest library planners in the country. He recently served as an advisor to Allegheny County Library Association, a consortium of 41 independent libraries, including Sewickley Public Library. The trustees also conducted a series of conversations with area residents to solicit suggestions for meeting the critical need for additional space, The library also conducted a survey last year, assisted by Senior Men’s Club, in which most of the 800 persons polled affirmed the need to address the crowded conditions in the building. “It's a wonderful problem to have,” says Hennessey. “It indicates what a vital role the library serves in our commu- Coatinued on Page 2
