For many, it means a chance at a new beginning. For others, it means the end of era. Sewickley Water Works will experience both. Ernest Thcei is retiring after more than 40 years with the water works, 23 of them spent as superintendent. Mike McMahan becomes only the fourth superintendent in water works history. Before starting his career with the water works in Bcscsahcr ef 22SS, Steel worked as a plumber, roofer and supply clerk for the Air National Guard. As Tfceci tells the story, he took some classes after getting a Job with the water works, That education gave him the knew4m and certification to work with water (IMritniSsa systems. ERNIE TUCCI (left) will be succeeded by Mike McMahan. When William Devine' retired in 1913, Tucci was the senior man at water worka “In those days,® says Tfceei, “you just worked and learned the system as yon came along.0 Net only, did he learn the Wiles of distributing water, TUcei and the employees of the water works had to learn new technology as it came along. “The meters are different now. And they use plastic pipe,® says Tucci. “There are also more modem techniques touse.® One thing that came along during his tenure was the computer, Many might argue that computers have slowed things down, hut for the water works, thqy made things “easier and more controllable.® Although compters made tilings snore controllable, they couldn’t control what Murphy’s taw kad willed.
