Take the shuttle to Honors Dinner These days, parking is at a premium at the Edgeworth Country Club. So we’ve arranged shuttle bus service from St. James Catholic Church parking lot for all attendees of the Sewickley Herald Honors Dinner this Friday. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., buses will bring our guests from the Broad and Walnut streets lot to the Edgeworth Club and return them to the church after the dinner, We encourage everyone to use this service since the roads boardering the club are either closed or have restricted parking. There will be no charge to our guests for this service. And there will be no blocks-long walk to the club to join us as we celebrate our honorees — Pam Wright, Woman of the Year; Lew Safran, Man of the Year; and The Adult Board of The Belfry, Citizens of the Year. This year’s nominees have quietly and consistently gone about-getting things done, orchestrating support for their causes and devoting hours and energy to projects that make other’s lives just a little bit easier, Since 1977, the Herald has selected candidates from a wealth of an involved citizenry for this special tribute. The Sewickley Herald Honors event begins at 6 p.m. with a reception. Dinner is scheduled at 7 p.m, Malachy Whalen, Sewickley mayor, will act as master of ceremonies. The Herald staff is looking forward to a wonderful evening and now a very convenient one with a safe, comfortable bus ride to and from the Edgeworth Club. ▼ SEWICKLEY Spring storm wreaks havoc around area By Mark Berton __________Stall writer______ A hail storm that hit Sewickley and the surrounding areas caused minor damage to several locations in the borough. Kevin Flannery, borough manager, said that the resultant runoff problems will prompt talks between Sewickley Borough and Sewickley Heights, “We do need to correct that water,” said Flannery. “It’s their storm water. We have to talk and take it from there.” Most of that damage was in War Memorial Park and over by the YMCA on Blackburn Road and stemmed from drainage of rainwater from Sewickley Heights. “We were up there between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., and it looked like there was a spigot open,” said Flannery. Flannery also said that the runoff caused at least half a dozen new water trails and moved earth, pushing dirt onto the tennis courts and soccer field of the YMCA. Susie Aufderheide, spokesperson for the YMCA, related that the damage didn’t stop there. “It came into the building, covering the pool with silt and • flooded the freeweight room,” she said. “It was a pretty ugly scene.” As a result, the pool was drained and cleaned. The carpet of the freeweight room, however, was not salvageable. David Stevenson, YMCA director, was out of town and not able to comment on the situation. Dollar amounts for the damage were not available at the time of printing from either the borough or the YMCA. Aufderheide said she could only remember damage-causing flooding at the YMCA one other time. -------Continued on Page 3 , fELL- YOUR NEWS TO THE HERALD: CAU 741 -8200, FA?C 741 ^5904 pR E-MAiL SHteXLpQGHPMSJNFimT.,,
