Wednesday, July 2, 1969 Ten Cents Festivities Start At 7 PM. Leetsdale July 4th Celebration To Feature 59-Unit Parade r If Mr. Myers Earl W. Myers, Local Realtor, Dead At Age 86 Earl W. Myers, 6^ Blackburn Avenue, prominent realtor of Sewickley, died on Sunday, June 29, 1969. at the age of 86. Mr. Myers, born in Canton, Ohio, was the son of Lee and Ada Myers, prominent hotel owners. He moved to Sewickley in 1904 where he and his brother Harry founded the Myers & Myers Grocery Firm, which later became Domahoes. In 1912 he married Elizabeth Challis, daughter of D. W. Chal-lis, noted contractor of this area. In 1932 he founded the Myers Real Estate Company, which he took an active interest in until his retirement in 1968. Mr. Myers was a member of the Sewickley Methodist Church, a Charter member of the Sewickley Valley Board of Trade, Past Master of Doric Lodge No. 630, the Islam Grotto of Pittsburgh, ■ Syria Temple (Life Member), Ancient Accepted Scottish Rile (Life Member), Association of Masonic Veterans, Society of Industrial Realtors, Greater Pittsburgh Board of Realtors, and National Association of Real Estate Boards. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Challis, his son, R. Bruce Myers, his grandson, Bruce W. Myers, and his sister Myrtle Osborne/ Youngstown Ohio. Friends are being received in the Richard D. Cole Funeral Home, 328 Beaver St., Sewickley, where services will be held .today, July 2, at 2:00 o’clock. Interment will be private. Each Commu'nity leader is asked to take steps to encourage public, participation in such a nation-wide observance and each citizen,- along with his neighbor, is asked to respond to the ringing of the bells ... Lef Freedom Ring! On the Fourth of July, 1776, the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall. Philadelphia, tolled forth at 2 p.m. to proclaim the signing of the Declaration of Independence. . . On each succeeding anniversary, the ringmg of bells around the nation reminded each citizen of the meaning of this most important day iii American history. At the time of the Civil War, Additional Tennis Court At Chadwick St. Playground At a special meeting of Sewickley Borough Council held Fi'iday evennig, June 27, bids were opened for the construction of an additional tennis court at the Chadwick Street Playground. The contract for-- this project was awarded to the Gavlik Company on its low bid of $7,630. Several items of Borough business were then discussed. Coun^ cil agreed to uphold the recommendation of the planning commission in the matter of illegal use of certain property on Kramer Street. Mr. Lawrence recommended and council agreed, that Allegheny County planning commission be requested to develop plans for the Sewickley sewage system under the Sewage Facilities Act. “Mounties" In July 4 Parade The Auxiliary Mounted Deputy Sheriffs of Allegheny County experiencing their busiest year, will take part in two parades in July, according to inspector William J. Hartle of 'Gibsonia. The “Mounties” will appear in the West Deer parade July 26th, and in Leetsdale on July 4. Inspector Hartle says 16 men, in their new uniforms, will ride their paliminos. The group has won many honors for appearance and skill. School Budget Up 12.9^; Taxes Raised 5.5 Mills At a special meeting of the Quaker Valley School Board of Directors on Monday evening, June 30, the Board adopted a budget of $2,999,433 fbr the 1969-70 school year. This figure is 12.9% higher than the 1968-69 budget of $2,628,844. School taxes to go with the budget were set at 39.5 mills real estate tax, up 5.5 mills over last year; a per capita tax of $5 under section 679 of the School Code; a per capita tax of $5 under Act 511 (making a $10 total per capita tax); .5% real estate transfer tax under Act 511; and .5% earned income tax under Act 511. The oath of office was administered to the newest member of the School Board, William D. DeCourcy, whose membership on the Board was approved at the Board’s last regular meeting on June 16. Mr. DeCourcy replaces Herbert S, Rogers, who resigned his membership. A list of professional a«d non-professional employees’ salaries was approved for the 1969-70 academic year, comprising the total list of employees. The resignation of Colleen McCoy, high school English teacher, was accepted with regret and appreciation for her past services. At the same time the Board employed Charles J, Mitsak as (Please turn to Page 28) Crowning Of Queen To Begin Day-Long Program The Leetsdale Community Activities Committee has announced that the Leetsdale Fourth of July Celebration will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday with the crowning of the queen. The crowning will take place in front of the Quaker Valley Senior High School. The Queen is Helen Iwaskewycz and her attendants will be Cheryl Bickel and Adrienne Brown. The ticket drawing will be held at 12:45 p.m. preceding the crowning of the queen. Mr. Robert Love and Mr. William Ponin-sky will preside over the queen crowning.
