In fact, it, can be a life saver. Chief Harvey J. Lauderbaugh, of the Edgeworth Eire. Department, says that the Edgeworth Food Market might have been destroyed laslt Wednesday evening if the firemen had not been conductihg a drill around the corner in the municipal building. “We were just having a routine practice when the call came in.” the chief remembered. “I still don’t know who reported the fire. The dispatcher just came in and told us the market was on fire.” Even though the fire truck literally on-. ly had to travel a matter of a few feet to 425 Chestnut Road, the fire still had enough of a start for the chief to label the blaze “severe.” It was also enough of a blaze to create a severe financial hardship for the longtime owners of the borough landmark. “Joe and. Mike .LoBello were pretty broken up over the fire,” Lauderbaugh emphasized. “They suffered a substantial loss.” Frances LoBello Evans confirmed that the family had no insurance. “I had been working on getting insurance, and the guy called me today (the day after the fire) to tell me how much it would be,” she revealed. “I’ll get it now,” she added. The fire did not touch the store itself but started in the back center of the budding, went up the walls and into the top sections of the white frame building, according to Lauderbaugh, He says the cause of the blaze is electrical. The store did, however, sustain some smoke and water damage. Mrs. Evans noted that inventory loss was substantially reduced because of local people who took home perishable items and stored them in their own freezers. Despite having the fire department around the bend, Chief Lauderbaugh found the blaze was not a simple one to extinguish. “It was a hot fire, and we couldn’t go in right away. We had to knock down for a while outside before we could gej at the insides of the building.” Although it took about an hour’s work to douse the fire, which begin at about 8:30 p.m., the fire fighters were not able to finally leave for home until 1 a.m. During the course of battle, there was a casualty, Fireman Kevin Creese was slightly injured when he slipped on the roof. Although the market will be closed for repairs and clean up the next few weeks, the LoBello family, who have had the market since 1941, plan to re-open. The charred space above the sign tells it all.
